I loved the way in which the writers brought Rick's loss of a hand to fruition in TOWL. It was a powerful, shocking opener to the episode (even if it was anticipated). Having Rick choose to cut off his own hand in an effort to get back to his family was more impactful than having him lose it by accident or by someone else's actions, as happened in the comics. I also think the scene is reminiscent of Merle losing his hand in season 1.
