Zach Miller had been looking forward to running the Hardrock Hundred Mile Endurance Run in southwestern Colorado for years. The 35-year-old runner sponsored by The North Face received entry into the 2024 event via one of race director Dale Garland’s six personal picks, and with a solid regimen of training under his belt, Miller appeared to be one of the favorites for this year’s event on July 12-13. But on July 5, he woke up in Silverton, Colorado, with considerable abdominal pain. Doctors in Durango, Colorado, initially thought he might have been suffering from kidney stones—the pain was con ..read more

On Friday night about an hour northeast of Quebec City, Jean-François Cauchon and Anne Champagne were among the 200 intrepid runners who headed off into the sunset to embrace the arduous challenge of the 100-mile Quebec Mega Trail race. Local runners who failed to finish the race in their previous attempts, Cauchon, a 31-year-old civil engineer, and Champagne, a 30-year-old physical therapist, were both running for a bit of personal redemption. After placing second in the 100-miler in 2022, Cauchon was hoping to compete for the win last year. But stomach problems did him in, eventually causin ..read more

For the last two years, Courtney Dauwalter has won the Hardrock 100. And for the last two years, she has set a course record. What else does the ultra-trail running superstar possibly have to prove on this impossibly challenging course? We’ll find out on Friday. The 2024 Hardrock 100 begins at 6 A.M. MT on July 12, 2024, and once again Dauwalter will toe the line. But this time, she won’t have the effort of a course-record-setting win at the Western States 100 fresh in her legs. Speaking of Western States, if that race is the Super Bowl of ultra-trail running—that is, the center of the univer ..read more

“It’s nice to be here and feel small amid the big mountains.” Before arriving in Silverton, Colorado last week, François D’Haene spent some time pondering what will be his third attempt running the iconic Hardrock 100 Endurance Run. (The race begins on Friday, July 12 at 6 A.M. MT.)  The 38-year-old Frenchman is one of the world’s great ultra-trail runners. His list of podium results would fill a page, and then some. Among them are four wins each at the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc in Chamonix, France, and Reunion Island’s Grand Raid de la Réunion. He holds the supported speed record on Cal ..read more

Jean Fortier is quite sure that anyone who runs the wild and scenic trails between Charlevoix and Beaupré, in Quebec, Canada, will feel like they’re temporarily teleported to a lush and challenging trail running nirvana. But more importantly, before and after enduring the technical trails, massive elevation changes, and the heat and humidity of Quebec Mega Trail, Fortier, the race director and co-founder, knows they’ll be able to enjoy a different kind of paradise—a festival that includes live music and DJ sets, nutrition and fueling seminars, race expo, yoga sessions, shakeout runs, a fun ob ..read more

Very rarely in ultrarunning does everything go according to plan. On paper, at least, the 2024 Western States on June 29 was one of those enigmatic days. Three-time winner Jim Walmsley and second-fastest woman ever Katie Schide entered the race as the clear favorites. And they not only gleamed under the pressure, they surpassed the hype to further cement their names in the history books. Breaking the tape in front of hundreds of fans cheering at the Placer High School track and thousands more watching on the livestream, Walmsley, 34, won his fourth title in the second-fastest time ever of 14 ..read more

As last winter was about to turn to spring, Sophia Laukli was eager to get back to the trail running season. The 24-year-old American two-sport endurance athlete won her first World Cup race on the Nordic ski circuit in January and finished 22nd in the final World Cup standings. Eager to regain the running form that helped her win several races in the Golden Trail World Series international trail running circuit last year, she worked with her Norwegian ski coach, Hans Christian Stadheim, to develop a program to transition back into running, and began logging easy runs on off days last winter ..read more

2024 Western States 100 Men’s Preview
Trail Runner Magazine

On paper, the 2024 Western States 100 men’s race looks like the same old story. Jim Walmsley, the three-time champion and course record holder, is back to reclaim his title at the race that skyrocketed his career. But this isn’t the same Jim Walmsley. It’s certainly not the Jim Walmsley of 2016 who didn’t have $400 to put together to pay the race entry fee in one installment and then, clad in a nondescript white t-shirt punctuated with hand-cut holes, a pair of three-inch split shorts, and an impossibly bouncy running belt, led the race under course record pace with seven miles to go when he ..read more

From Maine to Mercantour: The Rise of Trail Running’s Quiet Champion Katie Schide

“It’s a get-to-know-you kind of piece,” I tease Katie Schide. “Good luck. It’s never been done!” she laughs. We’re both being sarcastic. On my desk is a copy of one of France’s top trail running magazines. And in the corner is the headline, Rencontre Katie Schide et Germain Grangier. Rencontre, which roughly translates to “get to know you.” After winning several of the world’s most competitive trail races, almost every trail running media outlet has written the rite of passage get-to-know-you piece on the trail running couple. Yet, even if the outlines of the story are commonly known, Schide ..read more
