I have a basic Borther sewing machine I got for $50 in 2010. I’ve been looking into upgrading into something that can use to make a quilt as well as my basic sewing needs. What do I need to look for in a new machine?

I love the gravity pattern and don't like traditional things so I decided to make it in Moda Grunge. Between my local shop and Etsy I got 111 colors in either fat quarters or 1/3 yard cuts and hammed this out in 1.5 weeks. The good thing about buying this much fabric is I made 2 centers at the same time and I'll change up the background for the next one.
I have to wait until fall to finish it when the flannel backing I want is released. It's not perfect, but really with this many points how could it be ?.

I’ve got a photography backdrop stand I’m wanting to use as a design wall- so theoretically I can dismantle when not using but realistically….well I know my limits ? What fabric would be most effective and economical to use? I was looking at an upholstery fabric that’s like the interior of car boots/trunks but it’s $17 a meter (aus$) I’ve read polar fleece and flannel work? Batting is so crazy expensive here it’s not financially viable for this project

How do you your quilts super cozy? I know that less quilting = less firm, but what do you like for batting/backing to make it as soft and comfy as possible?

I usually sew clothes but I have enough scraps and I want to make one of those wild old quilts without a pattern and just odd pieces sewn together with pretty stitches.
Now I'm wondering if I should zigzag over all the seam allowances or if that even matters when you quilt.
I guess a large quilt is not washed thaaat often so it should be fine. But what about pillow cases or smaller stuff?
And would you sew the pices together with a machine first and use the decorative stitches to quilt? Or do you sew them, use the decorative stitches on top and then quilt with another stitch so that the "ugly ..read more

making a belated (bc I'm not finishing before Sunday) mother's day quilt for my aunts and this is the red and pink colourway bc it's one aunts fave and the next is teals and greens cause those are other aunt's fave. this is fabric from KF, Rashida Coleman, some from stash and others I can't remember right now. these were so speedy to knock out with the stripology ruler thanks for the rec on that one.
also I thought you'd appreciate that I decided to buy a folding banquet table (on sale too, yusss!) to use solely for basting beasts like the one awaiting me rn. I tried the wall but it's to ..read more

Does any of you solely quilt with old fabric/clothes as a way to recycle them? I am curious about projects that had (almost) no fabric costs. Pictures and stories would be much appreciated! ?
