Planted 3 years ago when it was 7-8’, now clearing over 11’. The cool fan leaves are getting bigger and fuller every season. The north Texas climate is brutal for these but I’m keeping my fingers crossed it keeps flourishing!! ?? Just wanted to share as I see a lot of questions about ginkgo but not a ton of info since they’re less common especially in warmer zones. Happy to answer questions but just be warned, I’m no expert and lived most my life in the desert until now ☺️ submitted by /u/LifesShortKeepitReal [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Damaged tree - thoughts on survival

At some point I believed this tree to be a cedar elm? A correction would be appreciated - I do not know what it is. The scar attempting to heal was there when we moved in 10 years ago or so. I always assumed it took a strike of lightning - I have another tree on that side of the house that also seemed to have taken a bolt but maybe I am jumping to conclusions. The other day I was clearing the Bradford pear abominations from the yard my neighbor asked "what happened to your tree" and pointed at this one - and I said its been that way since we moved in...and then I saw the horrible horrible cra ..read more

How can I help this Eastern Redbud survive?

Hi all, apologies in advance, it's hard to get clear photos of this tree. Pic 1. This is our Eastern Redbud, bought online 4 years ago during COVID to honor my dad who'd just died. It was doing very well, but two years ago it was damaged during an ice storm—the main leader snapped off in the wind. Since then it's got one healthy offshoot that consistently leafs out, and this year put out its first buds. Pic 2. The healthy shoot is the ? blue line. When fully leafed out it gets pretty heavy and sags away from the trunk, and I'm worried it's going to break off in the wind. Everything above the ..read more

I planted this white flowing dogwood as a seedling last year. It looks like it's growing out wide, but hasn't had any vertical growth. Is that normal? I'm in zone 8b. North East Texas.

Is this tree worth saving? I was told that since it is split all the way up, that it looks like it's dying from within and will only last another 6months before falling over - does that sound right? I'll keep it if it can recover from the split. In Zone 7.

Field experience needed—where to get?

I’m a 32 year old female arboriculture student and I’m highly, and I mean highly, motivated to become a good arborist and specialize in tree diagnostics. I know I need a good deal of field experience to accomplish this, but I’m also aware that I’m on the older side of being useful in a production environment. My body still works just fine for now and I’m a really hard worker (maybe a little competitive?), but I realize I’m not as strong as the guys and kinda ahem ..old. Where should I go to get field experience? Am I just psyching myself out about being too old? All advice welcome. Thanks in ..read more

Advice on limb removal

I feel like the limb on the left should be removed, like it might split in a storm. Should I remove it? Is now a good time? At what angle should the cut be? submitted by /u/Raised_Oldschool [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Planted this 8 foot clump yesterday. I’m concerned about the trunks staying curved. Should I stake them or will they straighten up with age? submitted by /u/Cold-Ingenuity5778 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
