Hand/wrist issue with clarinet

Hi all. Thanks in advance for any thoughts. Yesterday I got my clarinet out for the first time in years and years. I have broken my right wrist, back in 2018, since the last time I played it. Well. I knew that wrist was never going to be quite right again, but I didn't realize how bad it was until I got out my clarinet. It was very difficult getting my right hand into the correct position on the clarinet and it hurt down the side where I broke it afterwards. I can play my little... Bass clarinet questions. Instrument and ligature + short clip

Hi, I'm a professional saxophone player, but in these days I'm falling in love with the bass clarinet. I started to play it in a big band, and now I have very few occasions to play it, because I'm doing more jazz trios and quartets. But I love this instrument so much that I've discovered that I need to practice everyday for pleasure. Maybe if a hard work will show up I'll be ready. Anyway I'm playing on a Yamaha 221II clarinet and a Vandoren B50 with Vandoren blue box 3 reeds. I have never... bass clarinet questions. Instrument and ligature + short clip ..read more

Alto clarinet choices

I'm getting a used serviced alto clarinet and turns out I have several choices. I asked for serial #s to try to narrow said choices down but now I can't find lists for the Selmer altos, only the Vitos. I'm not a clarinet person (but I'm hoping to become one). I know they are all resin, and I know that altos are the red-headed stepchild of the clarinet world. I'm good with that. But I'm not familiar with clarinets and especially not altos in particular so I don't know what the... Alto clarinet choices ..read more

I’m playing the Tenor Sax/Clarinet part of a ten piece little-big band. Sing, Sing, Sing. There’s a three bar rest, then on to clarinet and a really exposed, important section. Any hints/suggestions to ease this transition? Thanks ..read more

I've been considering selling my Penzel-Mueller Brilliante because I hate trying to keep up with clarinet maintenance when I really don't play it very often (as posted elsewhere in this forum.) The thing is, I like the horn, and really don't want to sell it and settle for a synthetic if I don't have to. I still want to play clarinet from time to time; I'm just really focused on sax at... Backun Alpha Bb Soprano Clarinet

I recently purchased a Backun Alpha clarinet, which is Backun's entry-level "plastic" clarinet. I didn't plan on the purchase as I had quit the clarinet to focus on the saxophone and sold my Yamaha Custom CSVR earlier this year. The store owner and I were chatting about some saxophone related topics, and he brought up my clarinet playing. I explained to him why I quit playing. 1) I felt time spent on the clarinet was distracting me from my saxophone playing (I can devote limited time/energy... I mentioned in another thread that lessons aren't an option right now, so I'm working through music on my own. I've pretty much finished with the Standard of Excellence book 1, and I'm wondering what your recommendations are for a new method book, be it SoE book 2 or something else. Thanks for your help ..read more

Soprano sax american cut Legere reeds on clarinet

Hi, I wondered if anybody else had tried using Legere Soprano Sax American Cut reeds on Bb clarinet? I just started and I'm finding that they are very good indeed. I usually play cane and I can't play anything harder than a vandoren classic #1.5, but conveniently the American cut also come in #1.5. The interesting thing is that they are much much softer then cane, and I have worked my way up to #2 and am still finding them incredibly responsive. I think I could still go harder by 0.25 or... I've been trying to find more information on Rigotti's Hot and Swing reeds after running across them on Amazon, but while I get plenty of places to BUY them on Google, I'm not seeing any reviews or comparisons by people that USE them. From the name I'd think they were a jazz reed, and with Rigotti Golds not coming in a "jazz" cut for Bb Clarinet (but they do for Bass Clarinet. Go figure) I thought "Well maybe that IS their jazz cut." But then the description talks about them being designed... Rigotti Hot And Swing Reeds ..read more
