I’m a new author working on my first novel and just looking for some feedback. This is the start to my story, an excerpt from chapter 1. It’s my first draft, so don’t mind any repeated words. Gilded Time John works at the train station. Specifically, he is a guard at the station where he has the daytime shift. I wrote a short, closer to flash fiction, it’s 1500 words. There is a brief sex scene that is integral to the story, the husband needs to find her cheating, and I feel like it’s short enough but is it too jarring or gratuitous? I'm writing a science fiction book and I ran into a problem: the protagonist has to hack through the central system of the "enemies", but I don't know how to write this part of the story. I would like to dwell on what happens, for continuity with the previous piece of history, but I don't know how to do it and I'm also afraid that if the book were to reach the eyes of an expert, they would judge it very harshly and call me incompetent, but more than all this I would like to write something technically correct. I have a criminal romance novel in the works. I have the plot/conflict_GAP_ending but the gap between the conflict to the ending is giving me a massive mental block. I left it because I thought writing the ending first would help me figure out what I wanted to build into but it didn't help.
