I want to start training to become a Firefighter, but I can’t figure out what exercises to do. Is there any workout/exercises y’all can give me that will help me out especially for the physical agility test?
I’ve thought about getting a weighted vest to help simulate an air pack. I would be working out at a gym, so I will have stair climbing machines and other helpful things like sleds.
Thank you!!

I'm in the academy and wanted to ask if anyone had advice for dealing with the mask fogging up when your not on air. I've heard about putting a thin layer of dawn dish soap on the inside of the mask but is it that simple?

So I’m still working on getting my EMT/ FireCerts before applying to departments after I transition out of Active Duty military service. I was connected with a battalion chief over a city that sends you to their own academy for certs. I’ve been told that he could pretty much guarantee me a job with the dept before I’ve even tested with the dept or anything. Is this likely? I’m not sure how much pull that position actually gives you in the hiring process. Ultimately my question is can that position have that much say in the process? I’m trying not to get my hopes up so any honest advice would ..read more

For departments that bill for calls - do the firefighters collect the insurance information at MVAs and fires? Have any of you seen problems when these programs get rolled out, like hesitation to call 911?

Title not meant to be such a pun: long post… I was home playing games today in between college courses and I heard my mother outside screaming for help. Her and I were the first to respond to this fire and just noticed the heavy flames coming from the backside of our neighbors. We don’t know much about them.. I was so worried it was a house full of people.. I had got there all I had on was sweat pants. No socks, shoes, shirt.. I tried kicking the door in and felt like I might get a budge so I tried the windows and the second window was loose so I actually broke the lock on it by prying i ..read more

I’m about to start my first day at a 24/48 department. I like to optimize as much as I can and at least try to plan to have the best outcomes. My question is what does your schedule look like when you get off?
Do you go back to sleep when you get home?
Do you workout during the days off?
When do you try to go to bed and wake up?
Add anything you think makes the biggest difference in how you feel/ operate, good or bad

I’m an officer for a small volunteer department and I’m looking for constructive feedback and the ability to talk through decision making. I’ve tried to engage other officers at my department after being in command at calls but they all just say I did a good job.
I don’t ask them to talk about the call for praise. If I truly did well that’s fine, but in my opinion there’s always things that can be improved. I also want to hear what they would have done differently. Yes, some of this requires knowledge of the call and/or local procedures but I don’t know if that is a hard requirement for all d ..read more
