Here is our review of our travelling adventures from the last year. In 2020 we wrote our first blog reviewing our year of travel. The worldwide coronavirus pandemic continues to create many challenges to travel. In Australia, the international borders were mostly closed, so no trips to other countries were feasible. Our home state of Western Australia stayed relatively virus-free (quite unique around the world), partly due to very strict state border controls. So we were left to continue exploring our own backyard, and also had the chance to head interstate. We continued to make good use of th ..read more

Having Fun in 21 – the Wood Annual EOY letter 2021

Having survived Perth’s hottest Christmas period on record, in a house without aircon, we know we can survive anything. It was a crazy end to another crazy year. Who would have thought we would still be wearing masks, though we have missed most of the lockdowns being protected by the WA border wall. You can imagine we are getting itchy feet as we are unable to fly anywhere, although we have again had a year making good use of our caravan, travelling more locally around WA and parts of Australia.  Relaxing on the houseboat on Corroboree Billabong – a highlight of our trip to the Northern T ..read more

All Places We Stayed in Our Van in 2021 Last year, our first year with our Jayco Hawk caravan, we stayed at 25 different campsites. It was such a fun activity to look back at every place we stayed, we have decided to continue recording each of our campsites (except for one we missed!). This year we beat our total from last year, staying at 31 campsites throughout the year. It is going to be a challenge to keep this up, it would be great to stay at as many places in 2022, however, I can’t see this trend continuing. Also see our list of favourite caravan parks of Australia. 1. Wave Rock Caravan ..read more

Western Australia is renowned for its abundance of spectacular wildflower displays during Spring. If you know where to go, there are some amazing tours of surrounding WA areas, that you can go to see them covering fields in amazing colours. Different regions of WA have a different range of wildflower types, and the best time to see them is in August to November, with October being the peak time. Even close to Perth you can still get to sample some amazing displays of wildflowers. Each year we make sure we don’t miss visiting Kings Park for the annual spring festival. There are thous ..read more

A Scouting Family Holiday – Manjedal Activity Centre

As our children are active members of scouts, we are able to stay cheaply at a great camp spot just out of Perth in the hills, the Manjedal Activity Centre (MAC). Non-scouting families can also stay here too, at a very reasonable price. Even though it was the school holidays, it seemed very quiet, nestled in the many acres of bushland. After our last holiday travelling around in our caravan, we were keen to have a break and stay somewhere without wheels. There are many different types of cabins and dorm accommodation available, including tent sites. We chose to stay in one of six cabins called ..read more

Croc School Report

Not all of our blogs are written by the adults of this family. Here is a message by Jetson back to his school teacher about some of the things he had seen in the Northern Territory. Be Crocwise Hi Mrs Burton and room 22 I saw lots of crocodiles mostly on the jumping crocodile tour but also saw a few on the houseboat. Crocodiles are sorted into two categories, freshwater crocodiles and saltwater crocodiles. Salties can grow over 5m and freshies are much smaller. Females stop growing at a younger age than males. So males would be larger than females. We saw one of the largest crocodiles, called ..read more

Photos of Us in Every Country

As avid travellers, we have ticked off quite a few countries since our first trip to Vietnam as a couple in 2001, an amazing trip that started us on this travelling adventure, exploring the world whenever we can. Fortunately, we tend to take quite a few photos too, so we have plenty of images of us in all corners of the globe, though not always everyone in the photo. Our total country count travelling as a couple is 45, and the kids have been with us for most of those too. Below is a photo of us from each country we have visited, from the most recent to the first, starting with our home town a ..read more

Lord Howe Island – Australia’s Hidden Gem

Back in January 2014, to celebrate our ten year wedding anniversary we visited an Australian hidden gem, Lord Howe Island. It is a place we have wanted to visit for a long time, we even considered going here for our honeymoon, but unfortunately, the plan fell through and we went elsewhere. Since our first child was born over seven years ago, this is the first time we have spent a night away on our own without the kids, and we had four nights to ourselves on this sub-tropical island paradise. Day 1: New Year No staying up late on New Year’s Eve for us, as we had an early start the next morning ..read more

We are itching to get travelling again. Last year we did not do too bad considering what was going on around us. We have collated our travel highlights from last year, some pretty cool memories we think. We hope that this coming year is full of such highlights too. There is a big trip on the horizon, details coming soon. With the coronavirus still lingering, planning ahead for holidays now is challenging. It is difficult to know what will be happening tomorrow, let alone the next school holidays. You can’t organise too much, as plans may have to change at the drop of a hat. Bein ..read more

Have you ever played the ‘would you rather’ game? It is a popular activity for our family when travelling, particularly on a long journey. We have created a travel version with 25 stimulating questions. The would you rather game is a great conversation starter, that can potentially go on for a long time, ideal for those long road trips, on a long flight, or while sitting and waiting for your bus. It is also a great game to play with your potential travel partners, as it can reveal a lot about what to expect from them when you travel together, and whether you will be compatible travelling partn ..read more
