Guide rod...

View attachment 28315 The right side of the guide rod has the spring loaded tip. the spring is in a hollow inside the rod and allows the tip to move in and out of the rod as pressure is applied. The end cap is machine pressed and crimped onto the rod and does not allow for cleaning or maintenance of the spring or tip assembly. i want to keep the gun original so changing the part is not an option. Hi Gang,... just bought my first S&W semi-auto. Its a 5903 and is in good condition except for one thing... The guide rod on these have a spring loaded tip that fits into the take down lever when assembled. It seems to work fine but it sounds and feels like its got ground glass in it... I would be surprised if this is a normal condition, but wanted to ask if anyone with a 5903 had this issue.... thanks to all. The... crunchy guide rod ..read more

As is typical with me I bought a S&W .45 Compact on an impulse. I realized I should have researched it first, but this happens all to often with me. At any rate, any comments or suggestions for it? It has stopped snowing so I'll take it out for a test shoot this afternoon ..read more

Model 10-7 ammo question

Thought I would take my old SW 10-7 out to give her some range time and was wondering, would there be any reason Not to use some Russian steel case 158 gr fmj that I have? (Same question for my 1975 Colt Agent) Is a steel case likely to expand in the cyl? I have other ammo I could use but just curious if the Russian stuff should be left at home ..read more

S&W Strange blue box

Hello everyone, I am new to the S&W world and the forum. And hopefully can get some guidance. I picked up a Model 10 recently, but it comes with a strange blue box. It said "performance center" around the logo, and it is kind of big for a standard Model 10 or 13 revolver. Can anyone give me some background about this box? Is this a legit S&W box? Thank you in advance ..read more

Well, here it is. My 617 set up for Steel Challenge, shooting RFPO ( Rimfire Pistol Open) against the autos. I just love the feel of a double action revolver, especially with today's upgraded triggers. Shown is the RevUps hammer kit but I took that out and put my old Apex Tactical Mass Drive Hammer in it. The Mass Drive lets me shoot a lighter double action pull and it's set at 7 pounds. Because of it's design there is more force even at lighter... I Can't Leave Well Enough Alone 617 Mods ..read more

I've inherited Pop's revolver. Having trouble pinning it down. It's got a C prefix on the SN. But has a 4 1/4" pencil barrel and the front sight is round like an older Pre model. Haven't found any pics that seem to match it on the web. Any one know about this? I'll try to get a pic tonight and post it ..read more

617 And DS-10s

Today I got to play with my S&W 617 using DS-10 speed loaders and loading block. I fired 140 rounds of Federal 36 grain plated ammo and all went off without a hitch using an Apex Mass Drive Hammer Kit. The double action pull is 8 pounds and single action is 2.5 pounds. I don't shoot single action but it's nice to know what it is. Today I just wanted to see if the gun would fire 100% after putting the Mass Drive Hammer in. Trigger pull is... 617 And DS-10s ..read more
