I sent this message to our Type Network foundry partner roster last week. I don't assume it's of interest to everyone, but I wanted to share it and invite a discussion. You can also reach me directly at matthew at typenetwork dot com.  --Matthew Ending the Partnership Between Type Network and Monotype Effective July 1, 2024, the partnership between Type Network and Monotype will end. Type Network will no longer sell Monotype fonts. With this transition, Font Bureau is fully separated from Type Network. The two companies hav ..read more

New TalkingLeaves plugin for Glyphs
TypeDrawers
by Justin Penner
6d ago
I just released a free, open-source plugin for Glyphs that's designed to give type designers a high level overview of the world's writing systems and scripts, as well as some tools to tell you what your font supports, and add missing glyphs to support more languages. My goal with this project is to make it easier to do things like: Increase language support when you're only missing one or two characters from some languages Explore other scripts and languages at an overview level by looking at what languages use a given script, and how many speakers each script and language has. And I have so ..read more

Fonts with capital letters slightly less than full height
TypeDrawers

I'm interested in looking at fonts with the capital letters slightly shorter than full height. Specifically text fonts for book printing. Serif or sans. I am not specifying a subject matter. Here are a few examples to clarify: Marco https://www.type-together.com/marco-font Greta Text https://www.typotheque.com/fonts/greta-text Gentium Book https://software.sil.org/gentium/ Dolly Pro https://www.underware.nl/fonts/dolly/features/ In the past decades I've looked at some of this kind of font, but I wasn't interested and did not note or remember them. But now I am interested. Is there a proper co ..read more

Best software for Project Managing on Type Design team & projects
TypeDrawers
by Francisco Torres

Hey guys, I would like to know what kind of software/platform you use for managing a type design team and/or a type design project. I use slack for daily conversation, dropbox to share files but I need a platform (like Airtable, Monday, Basecamp, etc) for managing a few projects. I would like to know what fits the best for a common type design project and a small team of 4/5 people. Thanks Francisco ..read more

Making a stroke-based font in fontlab 8, need tips on efficiently flattening
TypeDrawers
by Derik Schneider

I'm pretty much at a dead-end in Fontlab 8 with a stroke-based (think vector font inspired) design that I wanted to export as a variable font.  The short of it is I'm getting artifacts on certain glyphs with the interpolation and it can't even properly export this stroke-based font, it just ignores the stroke-path and wants to fill in the "empty" holes of the open paths. So, I'm gonna have to "solidify' everything. Is there a mass way to do this or do I need to dive into each glyph and setup my shortcut keys to get this done as quick as possible?   Example of a B: https ..read more

Fifteenth Century and Jenson
TypeDrawers
by John Savard

I have long wondered if the distressed typeface known as Caslon Antique, and originally called Fifteenth Century, was derived from a conventional typeface. I've come across something which looks like it could be the source; Jenson, as designed by Joseph W. Phinney in 1893 at the Dickinson Type Foundry. However, I came to this conclusion from an illustration of that typeface which did not look like his Jenson Old Style, which certainly had nothing to do with Caslon Antique ..read more

Easily animated font for motion graphics
TypeDrawers

Hi, I am a graphic designer and motion designer from Cleveland, Ohio. I have designed other fonts in the past for various client specific uses but never at the scale of what I have been working on with this typeface. I am very curious to get feedback. Upfront you need to know this is not a traditional design. This entire family was designed around the idea of being easily animated for motion graphics and so when making decisions about design or functionality they came down to how well it would perform when animated primarily in After Effects. Things like geometry and straight lines were import ..read more
