Hi all, I’m about to purchase a microscope and wondering if the AmScope SM-3T would be a good one or if another model would be recommended over it. My budget is right about the price of the SM-3T, but maybe there’s a better one ..read more

Screw holder or work block?

Hello, I'm new to the site and just getting into watch making. I bought a big jar of watch parts and broken movements from the flea market to practice on. While sorting through them I found this. I'm guessing it's for holding the screws from a movement or just a block to work on top of. If it's for holding screws, is it for a particular movement of just general pocket watch movements of the time. Tried to do a Google lens search but didn't find it... Dent removal from brand new watch

I just received a NOS Breitling Chronomat 44 which I bought from the website of a jewellers based in London. It was still wrapped in protective film but there is a noticeable and deep dent in the case. Initially I thought it was an air bubble in the film. I was wondering how easy or difficult it is for a watchmaker to remove. Would this involve heavy polishing that would affect the shape of the case. How much is it likely to cost? I want to work out... Dent removal from brand new watch ..read more

How To Sort Through Trash

Through no fault of my own, I have found myself the proud owner of $40 whole dollars on Amazon.com. I'm pretty new to watchmaking and so I thought I'd upgrade my tool kit with my little windfall. I'm thinking of tweezers. How do I sort through all the poor-quality trash and find something that won't actually worsen my work? I know there are big, expensive names to look for, but does anyone have recommendations on lesser known, inexpensive brands that are good quality? When I see something... I just got this gorgeous watch a few weeks ago (1969 Citizen Seven Star Deluxe). Wore it for the first time to a jazz concert on Saturday night. Look in my watch box just now, and I see the crystal is broken in half! I am obsessive about protecting my watches when I wear them. Don't remember a single knock on it. Didn't see anything wrong when I put it away. There isn't a scratch or nick on the crystal. But it is completely cracked! How could this happen? It is not a thin crystal... What on earth!! Silver dial issue

I'm working on cleaning up a late 60's early 70's watch and just discovered that it has a silver dial. Not a silver "coloured" dial an actual silver dial and boy does it like to tarnish now that I've cleaned it up... most likely removing whatever coating originally protected it. The question is what can I use to seal it from oxygen. Everything i can think of (or have) will go on waaaaay too thick. Ideas ..read more
