We had a family drop off Henry to us this morning. They said they had a box turtle that is 1 year old. This looks to me to be a tortoise. Genus anyone? Husbandry was not great which is obvious but now he’ll be in the outdoor enclosure designed for him. I’m no tortoise expert I get the different species mixed up between Herman’s Greek and Russian. Hello I'm saying this knowing he's probably dead I picked him up and touched his legs and he won't react it's been a few hours now. He walked all over the tank yesterday then landed in a spot and was there since last night unmoved. His head is out of his shell. Ive moved him around a few times with no reaction. Hey, we got a Russian tortoise and the owner kept saying “I’ll text you everything you need to know” and then texted me nothing and ghosted me and won’t respond after she dropped him and all of his gear off. ? A man in my community had a couple desert tortoises. He had tags on them and believed they were both males. Last spring be discovered a few eggs. Awhile later 2 baby turtles hatched. He was moving to a colder climate and so he found separate homes for his two older, registered tortoises legally. He heard I had a walled in large backyard w/o a pool and asked if I’d take one of the babies. 3/4 of a year later Juniper is healthy and growing. So I am making my tortoise a new cage. I have done it in the past, but this next one will be bigger than what they need so hopefully it will be good for more than a few years. I am thinking of using sliding glass doors to allow access. I did it before, and he kept trying to climb through the glass. His current cage, I go in through the top. Meaning there is no glass at his level but has full length windows on each side. He still tries to climb. My question is this. If I were to go back to the sliding glass doors, would that bother him? I have a housemate who rarely clears the water. This is the dirtiest its been. Can tortoises live in murky water like this? Context : I have never owned a tortoise but i absolutely cannot fathom any animal living in these conditions. What's crazy is that she left it at the house knowing nobody's home to feed it. She did NOT clear the water and dropped a bunch of pallets in its water for it to eat throughout the week she went away.
