Is there any reason my 'kitchen sink' smoothie is not healthy? It has no negative side effects on my digestion & includes some fruits & veggies I don't like alone but are very healthy. This is what goes into my crazy smoothie: blueberries, strawberries, peaches, avocado, chick peas, steamed kale, broccoli, cauliflower, red pepper, carrots, garlic clove, plain greek yoghurt, skim milk, white tea with lemon, 2 tsp evoo, cinnamon, ginger, pinch of several herbs. Hello! It's been a LONG time since I've posted here. But I need some advice and can't find it on Google (so far). One of my HUGE hurdles to losing weight is my diet (no surprise there). I have no appetite until around 3-4 pm usually. And it isn't just what I am not eating, it's what I am eating. In the morning when I first wake up (which is never very early - I get up between 10 am and noon), I have a very strong craving for sugar. I wake up VERY stiff, with u ..read more

Counting calories in bone-in meat

I have a question about how to accurately count the calories for bone-in meat (chicken thighs, wings, drumsticks, ribs, etc). I know it is best to use the packaging label to track, but is the bone included in the calories on the label? For example, if the label says 4oz of bone-in chicken thighs is 250 calories and the thigh just so happens to weigh 4oz and it’s bone is 1oz, would you track the thigh as 4oz or 3oz for the meat portion only? Do you deduct the weight of the bone ..read more

I keep getting kidney stones, and one thing to do is cut back on oxalates. Chocolate products are relatively high in oxalates. It is made from cocoa beans, which have two parts - cocoa solids (or powder) and cocoa butter. The former has oxalates, the latter does not. After all that (phew!), does anyone know if the FDA requires cocoa powder to be listed among the ingredients on the nutrition label ..read more

Why it's okay to be hungry when you diet. Sort of.

The problem is less the word "hungry" than that Americans don't have a word for "slightly hungry" when talking about dieting. Oh, sure, the British have the word "peckish" (while we have words and phrases like "full" "satiated" "I'm stuffed" and "I couldn't eat another bite" -- and you wonder why Americans are overweight when we have as many words and phrases for overeating as Eskimos have for snow), but I've yet to read a dieting article that's ever used the word. Meanwhile, Japa ..read more

Hello, I have been eating sunflower, flax, and sesame seeds for a while now, either raw or cooked, after having shredded and blended them together to make sure their nutrients are properly absorbed . In order to let my body take as much of the proteins they contain, is it wiser to cook them or not ? If so, should I use steam as for vegetables ? What would then happen to the various vitamins and trace elements (zinc, potassium, iron, magnesium) they contain, would they get damaged b ..read more
