Early to Rise SF Reopens in New NoPa Location

I’ve been eagerly anticipating the reopening of San Francisco’s scratch made, brunch pop-up Early to Rise. After closing a couple years back to focus on finding a more permanent location, Early to Rise is reborn in the light-filled NoPa corner that formerly housed the popular Automat bakery and cafe. Among the numerous breakfast spots in San Francisco, Early to Rise stands out to me for its detailed and refined approach to simple breakfast fare.  Chef Andrew McCormack’s menu is an excellent showcase of his fine dining background (Quince, Spruce) combined with his Southern roots. Alora, San Francisco – California Mediterranean Waterfront Dining

Alora is the newest California Mediterranean restaurant from ROOH owners Vikram and Anu Bhambri. Located on the Embarcadero waterfront at Pier 3, the modern, well-designed space features a stunning bar, elegant finishes, and a patio with a view of the bay. It was quite rainy when I visited, and the patio was fully enclosed and heated so diners were comfortably shielded. The kitchen is led by Chef Ryan McIlwraith (Bellota, Bottega Napa Valley, Coqueta) and features numerous coastal Mediterranean shareable dishes. I thought the mezze was strong, and I especially enjoyed the fluffy pita with muha ..read more

Farmhouse Inn – Relaxation and Fine Dining in Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley

To welcome in the new year, I enjoyed a relaxing stay at Farmhouse Inn, a luxury boutique hotel tucked away in Sonoma Country’s Russian River Valley. The charming property is owned by fifth-generation farmers, Joe and Catherine Bartolomei and features 25 guest rooms and two farm-to-table restaurants. I recommend splurging for a spacious barn suite, which comes with a well-appointed bathroom with heated marble floors, a steam shower, and jetted-marbled soaking tub. I also enjoyed walking around the calming, rustic property, which features a heated pool, gardens, chicken coop, fire pits, and wel ..read more

Mourad San Francisco – Stylish, Modern Moroccan Cuisine

As someone who loves trying new restaurants, and in a dynamic food city with an ever-growing list of notable spots, I find myself limited in time and resources to revisit even some of my favorite experiences. One such example is Mourad, an upscale and modern Moroccan restaurant in SoMa from chef Mourad Lahlou.  Mourad opened his eponymous space in early 2015 to high expectations after already establishing a name for himself with Michelin-starred Aziza. Mourad restaurant was a hit and quickly received a Michelin-star that year. I fondly remember two visits in those early years. The grand t ..read more

Little Shucker – A Bright, Modern Seafood Bar in Pacific Heights, San Francisco

Fresh seafood, cute interiors, $2 oyster happy hour, and good wine…how could you not have a good time at Little Shucker. This buzzy Pac Heights seafood spot from the team behind The Snug excels when it comes to simple, good seafood. I sampled a majority of the menu, and my favorite item was the Big Shucker, a classic chilled seafood tower that allows the quality to shine.  If you love oyster shooters, you have to try their two creative takes – a sake tomato dashi with uni and a play on michelada with kimchi and pilsner. In addition to the tasty raw oyster selection, I also enjoyed the war ..read more

Dalida SF, Vibrant Eastern Mediterranean Food in the Presidio

Dalida is a welcome dining option in the Presidio, serving upscale Mediterranean food in a beautiful setting. Husband-and-wife chef owners Laura and Sayat Ozyilmaz combine their extensive fine dining experience with Sayat’s Turkish roots for a modern and heartfelt menu. We opted for Chef’s menu, which was a curated experience of their a la carte items. They started us off with the breaking bread – a plate of wonderfully fluffy “chubby” pita accompanied by a spread which included hummus, muhammara, and smoked yogurt. Don’t miss this one. Another equally as vibrant and delicious starter was the ..read more

Contemporary California French Dining at ONE65 Bistro, San Francisco

I’m glad to see The Bistro at ONE65 reopen after a long break! I’m a fan of their amazing Patisserie on the ground floor but had never ventured upstairs til this month. The Bistro is a more “casual” California/French dinner restaurant on the third floor with an open kitchen. ONE65 is also home to the Michelin-starred fine dining concept O’ by Chef Claude Le Tohic and Elements Bar. ONE65 Bistro currently has three set menus – two, three, and five courses. The prix fixe menus are a bit on the pricey side, but depending on what you order, they can be more in line with typical San Francisco pricin ..read more

Ki Kim of Kinn LA at Turntable San Francisco

Chef Ki Kim of the lauded kinn restaurant in Los Angeles was the Turntable San Francisco guest chef in August, and he brought a reimagined Korean fine dining menu with many dishes from kinn. Korean-born Ki has experience working in notable upscale Korean restaurants such as Jungsik and Atomix in NYC, and Benu in SF. I thought his Turntable menu was a enjoyable combination of Korean flavors with an unexpectedly new presentation.  Some standout dishes included a visually stunning kurodai mulhwe (chilled sashimi soup), oyster noodles with an addictively thick oyster cream sauce, and roasted ..read more

After a couple successful years, Lord Stanley’s rotating guest chef concept Turntable is coming to a close. Chef-owners Rupert and Carrie Blease are bringing Lord Stanley back with current chef de cuisine Nathan Matkowsky and pastry chef Harper Zapf leading a new rotating Californian-French menu. If the food is anything like the incredible menu Nathan created back in May, we are in for a treat! The last Turntable residency will conclude at the end of September. I’ll be recapping my last few meals at Turntable, starting with the incredible menu from Javier Rodriguez in July. Chef restauran ..read more

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Turntable at Lord Stanley, home to a monthly rotating pop-up of fine dining chefs from around the world. Each time, I’m impressed at the execution of the diverse menus by the local team, with little downtime between pop-ups. Leading the team is Chef de Cuisine Nathan Matkowsky, who works with the guest chefs to ensure a seamless onboarding experience in San Francisco. Nathan worked with Lord Stanley chef-owner Rupert Blease early on in his career at Central Kitchen, and he was part of the Lord Stanley opening team that quickly earned a Michelin star.
