Anyone have any interesting stories, tales, lies, or truths about the Diamond "A" Cattle Company that used to exist in north central South Dakota around Eagle Butte, SD until the late 1930's? History The Diamond A Cattle Company was a nationally-known ranching outfit based in New Mexico and Colorado between 1885 and 1939. The company was created in 1885 by Frank G. Bloom of Trinidad, Colorado, and M.D. Thatcher of Pueblo, CO, as a subsidiary operation to the Bloom Land and Cattle... Read more ..read more

Howdy everyone, Got a question about one of my dorper ewes. We've had many successful lambings in the past from our other ewes that didn't require too much fuss. We have one dorper this year that has not moved at all in almost a full week. We're giving her hay, water, and electrolytes where she sits, but we're starting to worry about her. I've had to shift her around to rake up her droppings so that she's not sitting in her own. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like... Read more ..read more

Baldy bull market?

This is something that crossed my mind. I purchased a Black Hereford bull early '22 and my predominantly commercial Angus cows are calving. The cows have done a great job over the years and a few are up in the age. I was considering keeping a bull calf or two of my best cows and possibly keep one for the farm. Is there a market for black/ or red baldy bulls as breeding stock ..read more

Weaned my calves later than normal. Just the way life worked out with timing. Little bunch of my steers averaged 685 and heifers went 760. Anomaly with birth dates as heifers were all born first. One steer weighed in at 820. No creep and just our range. Amazing what happens with a great snow year and above average moisture all year. Kept three replacements and let the kids each choose and keep a heifer. (Gotta pay em somehow for doing all the work) Weaned calves on good oat hay... Read more ..read more

Stack yard sonnet My stack yard's full And so's my heart. Thanks don't seem enough, But it's where I'll start. Because you sent the snow, And you sent the rain, To renew my hope, And ease my pain. Years of drought We struggled through. And once or twice, I wondered if you knew. How hard it was, To keep this ranch. The doubt buried me Like an avalanche. But now that's past And faith's reborn. With each big bale Stacked on August morn. The winter's hay Is stored away To... Read more ..read more
