I am trying to get a new dairy heifer AI'd. Although I am not new to cattle, I always had a herd in the past so it was easy to identify heat by behavior. Right now I only have the one milk cow. I have been watching her closely since October and have not been able to pinpoint her heat. Hoping some of you can help me out! December 5: I wrote down that her vulva looked red and puffy, no other signs of heat December 26: Escaped out of the pasture and headed towards my neighbor's herd. She came... Looking for help as we convert to a rotational grazing operation. We have currently 30 head of cattle and would like to double that this year. We have access to a total of 190 acres, but the primary pasture is 120 acres, the other pasture sof about 30+ acres are a few miles away. Currently we allow the cows to graze contineous, and feed hay in the winter. We have periodically used cow feed to entice them to the pens. But they are on grass proabbly 95% of the time. If anyone has ideas on... Rotational Grazing in Mississippi ..read more

Hi there, we have raised a number of holstein bottle calves over the last ten years. We now have an about 7 month old miniature Hereford steer that we purchased last summer. He was out on pasture briefly this past fall and now he is in the barn. He gets free choice hay and mineral block. I believe he is about 250 to 300 pounds but we have not taped him lately. We will raise him to approx. 2 years old. Currently we are feeding him 16 sweet grain, probably a quart per day divided into two... I also posted this on the goat forum. I know that you are not supposed to feed grass clippings to a horse, but can they be feed to goats or cows? We have close to an acre as yard and a yard sweeper would pay for itself quickly if we could safely feed the clippings to our nigerians or mini cattle. Thanks ..read more

Hi! My husband and I are taking my family property back to its roots of being a farm and Wednesday (the 26th) morning we were blessed with a red devon heifer calf. All is great, but the weather is about to take a turn and I’m just a nervous nelly. It’s rained for the past 24 hours, and is mid 50s. However it’s going to continue to rain for the next day and drop to low 40s and even 20s at night. They have shelter but never use it. Should I try an get them in the barn? We bought the mama in...
