Does anyone have any idea what kind of foam Mikey Please uses? It looks like super fine styrofoam but its also super flexible. Any styrofoam I have messed with would snap if bent. Traditional foam is so floppy it wont hold up or carve well. Any thoughts ..read more

Can you tell if a stop motion animation has tweening?

It seems this 2011 alien footage (supposedly from the KGB in the 40s and 60s) is a modified stop motion puppet from the Mars Attacks movies, with a film scratch overlay added. The evidence leads me to agree with this conclusion. The quality of the video is low in the first place, but the animation is good. Are there telltale signs that the frames were tweened to create the fairly realistic movement of the puppets? Two relevant snippets in these links (sorry but the first one has an ad). I've timestamped the footage and each is only a few seconds long: https://youtu.be/RsQCXN4o4Ps?t=23 https ..read more

Preparing to make the mold of a puppet head sculpt
StopMotionAnimation Forum

Hi friends! Preparing to make a hydrostone mold of my chavant-sculpted puppet head. Trying to write out the steps before starting so I can try to not mess things up as I've worked so hard on the sculpt. In doing so, I wanted to pose a couple questions here in case anyone can clarify. Thank you. For the first half of the mold, after making the water-based clay bed, do you need to use vaseline or any mold-release before the hydrostone? OR is it only for the second half of the mold (when putting hydrostone to hydrostone) that you use vaseline/mold-release? For both halves of the hydrostone 2-par ..read more

Motion control loses connection
StopMotionAnimation Forum

hello,  I'm having a problem with my Noxon mod slider and dragonframe. It loves to do this thing where it loses connection with the slider and stops moving during a take. The waiting for moco window will just hang there for a bit and then it will let me take more pictures but the slider stops moving. Other times it works just fine. Very frustrating when you’re 200 frames into a shot and it just stops. Anyone else have this problem and been able to solve it?  cheers corey  ..read more

Tips for smoothing chavant clay in tight areas
StopMotionAnimation Forum

Hi friends, If you happened to catch my last post where I was asking for advice on duplicating a clay sculpt, I can provide an update that the replica was fairly successful. I was able to use smooth-on dragon skin 10 silicone to create a two part silicone mold of my original sculpted puppet head which I used chavant clayette clay for. I'd never used clayette before, but got it for a deal at my local art store and it turned out to be very soft and great to sculpt with. Once that mold was complete, I needed to get a different clay which was meltable to pour into the silicone mold to duplicate my ..read more

Hello everyone, as you all can tell I just joined. Before doing so I researched stop motion animation puppet/armature. I knew what stop motion animation was, growing up, watching TV shows and movies (darn it! I just dated myself...well at least it's not carbon dating. obviously I'm not yet expir-..wait, nope still here.) I have a home machine shop in my garage, I mean what else do you put in a garage? A car? I'm not an animal! When I was approached by a neighbor kid, who's a film school student in college, and found out I have a home machine shop and asked if I can build him a couple stop moti ..read more

Hi everyone, I'm planning on buying in my first ball and socket armature in the near future so I can work on my character animation, and I'd like to invest in something of a good quality. Do you have any recommendations? There are a few I'm leaning towards, and if you have any feedback from your own experience with them, things you've heard, or just the look of 'em, it would be super helpful. My top choices (so far) are:  Anibild THREE Kinetic Armatures K2 (or K3) Armature Puppet B1 Upuno Akira Thanks in advance ..read more
