…with some new parts. After sitting for a couple years with a cursed engine, the rig is running. Once again, special thanks to the Az Crew for looking out and hooking me up with a replacement engine. The rig is pretty much done except for the overhead pod for gauges and switches. It’s time to drive it. There’s not much left to upgrade. This is the updated build parts list (at least what I can recall). Posting here so I can keep track of what’s installed. 1990 Montero LS SHO fan 2.5k/4.5k... Read more ..read more

Cautionary Tale for Montero Owners Who Need To SMOG Their Car
Expedition Portal » Mitsubishi

As usual a month ago I received the notice from the CA DMW to renew the registration on my 96 Montero SR 3.5 (OBD II). Part of the request was the semi-annual SMOG test. I know a bit about the process and the system and I've done this many times. No big deal I thought. So a week or two later I drove over to a local place to SMOG the car. The place said they only do 2000 and newer (never heard of this before). So I said no problem and drove down the street to a second place. The second... Read more ..read more

V4AW3 torque converter

Can anyone confirm this is compatable with my v4aw3 transmission and not an aw2? It seems that most sites are pointing to one for the v4a51 The montero im looking at (98 SR from puerto rico with a 3.0) had the engine removed many years ago and the torque converter is missing. This is a higher stall as the 3.0 calls for. 3.5s had a low stall version as far as ive been able to figure out Anyone know of a toyota/lexus converter that would work? Possibly after a pump swap? Or would that require... Read more ..read more

Engine compatibility Montero vs. Montero Sport

I am sure this has been asked before, but I can't seem to find any info on it. Is the 3.5 in the Montero Sport a viable engine swap option for Gen 2 and 2.5 full-size Monteros with aging 3.5s? I am assuming the answer is "no", but I am hoping otherwise ..read more

I’ve been curious for a while now if the non-California spec (Fed-spec) Gen 2.5 Montys with the SOHC 3.5 have an EGR valve and solenoid. I feel like I read somewhere there’s a possibility it does not have one. Can anybody confirm? Also the Fed-spec should only have 1 catalytic converter right, no pre-cats ..read more

I've decided to stop cluttering my build threads with all the random friends things I'm also working on. So I'll post up my non build thread stuff here for my entertainment. Today i upped PA_JERO's cooling game, i put a temp sensor in his crossover pipe and trans pan. Now he can monitor his temps to the degree in his '94. The coolant temp was an easy drill and tap, i shaved down the boss for the engine cover he hasn't had in years then did the rest on a drill press for perfect alignment... Read more ..read more

Looking for sources

Hey guys, coming to you for your knowledge. I have a '95 Montero LS with the 3.0, manual trans and I love it. Have had it for about five years now, managed all the basic maintenance etc. but it is bone stock and am looking to get into some mods. The big question that I have is where are you sourcing equipment to regear? From my understanding, it looks like to get the "unicorn gearing" I would need part numbers MB241981 and MB598486 to achieve 5.29's. So does anyone have a good source to get... Read more ..read more

Morning, all. I've been lurking in the background for a while, enjoying the calm and knowledgeable atmosphere, fantastic build threads, and general camaraderie. Looking forward to learning lots from everyone and getting out there! Located in Alberta, Canada, I've been on a look out for the standard 3rd or 4th gen 4runner, which command quite the premium up here (and come with a whole lot of kms and rust, both body and frame) for quite sometime. Not fully buying into the 'Yota hype, and... Read more ..read more

How are you protecting your gas tank?

My gas tank is taking an absolute beating as I attempt to tackle more and more difficult obstacles. What have you guys done that has worked? Are the gas tank skid plates from ADD enough to protect from hard hits? Curious about a gas tank lift, but I don't plan to body lift my truck. I'd rather install 30mm lift Lovells coil springs ..read more
