Went up for the weekend to see the last snow of the season and to check for any carp activity. None seen. Water was pretty murky from the recent wind. Best place you could see about a foot under water. Hope it clears up by May when the spawn starts! -Keith ..read more

I have shot one snakehead with my bow. They look like a bowfin, aka grinnle but have a snake pattern on them! I filleted that snakehead and fried him up! I have never had a fish that tasted so good! Better than bass, crappie, bream, and catfish! So if you shoot one or catch one bass fishing fry him up and taste and believe ..read more

Yesterday I was walking out on a fallen oak tree that fell over the bayou. I saw a huge shadow, a carp and it was a 60 foot shot but he would not get any closer. I shot and the fish did not even spook! I had hit an underwater log or something! Told my wife to hold my bow as I waded into the water to retrieve my $40 arrow! I was hopping on stumps and logs to try and stay as high above the water as I could! I was up to the bottom of my chest in water! My biggest fear was a huge loggerhead... Be the fish ..read more

Bottle reel or spin cast?

I am using an AMS bottle reel. I upgraded later to the larger bottle. Which holds 150 feet of line verses 75. since they have come out with the rpm reel I am thinking about getting one for my wife. There is no button to push, you just shoot. The benefit of a spin cast reel is you have adjustable drag and can put a screw in rod! The rpm reel comes with 150 feet of 150 pound monkey wire they call it. About $70. I may make the switch to the rpm reel as well. When you shoot a big fish and you... Last year I shot a gar, just a little 3 pound short nose. I shoot a bottle reel with 200 pound orange nylon. This little gar cut my line and swam away with my $30 arrow still in it! adjust your bow poundage accordingly. If the gar is on your line, then you need to crank the poundage down. Gar have extremely sharp hulls. Indians used to use gar exteriors as body armor! If your shoot a gar and he is on your line, check the line for fraying. If it starts looking all fuzzy, then cut this part... Useful information ..read more

The dreaded glare

It is so hard to spot fish in the daytime. Especially when the shadows of trees distort your view. There are pockets of sunshine in some places and other spots are dark. All polarized lenses are not created equal! It strains your eyes bad without sunglasses. I would be crouching and standing trying to get a glimpse of a fish. The best lenses are amber or copper colored. For low light or heavily shaded areas use yellow polarized lenses. I wear glasses and use the clip on kind. Still... The dreaded glare ..read more

Shallow fish

I get so upset when I spook big fish! I was walking beside a creek trying to survey the water and a fish would shoot off into the depths! I mean you would think a fish 3 foot off the bank you would at least be able to see a fin sticking up. I have seen some of the biggest fish in shallow water. When you are patrolling a bayou on the bank get some binoculars and pay attention to the edges ..read more

What is it?

Sometimes it is hard to tell if what you are looking at in the water is a fish or a log. The water here in Arkansas is still a little cool. I spotted what looked like a long black stick. It was beneath the surface but was not moving. I shot and it was a massive long nose gar! If the sun is out and you are having trouble distinguishing your target. Usually if it appears to be black, it’s a fish. Even in heavily stained water a log will not be black ..read more
