Hi all, Looking for help/advice from the experts. I purchased my 1978 John Deer 401C front loader with rear gannon about 2 years ago. It was purchased as a project needed an injection pump and much more. I'm a pretty good general mechanic, and was able to get the tractor up and running. The issue I have not been able to resolve since day one is the hydraulics. From day one I would get a really bad chattering every so often when activating the hydraulics. After changing all the fluids... Help with my hydraulics ..read more

Greasing 149 Spindles: An Enigma To Me

I recently acquired a beautiful condition 149 last week. The original owner told me this evening he put very little hours on it the last two years. He did tell me however in the last 2 years he did grease everything. Not knowing, when I got it home, I put about 2 pumps of grease into each spindle. I know these are sealed. Will it be harmful that I added grease to these spindles even though he did this at some point in the last year or so and didn't use the mower much? I'm not used to having... I was mowing earlier with my RER and when I stopped for a break I noticed a ~1.5in stick was lodged clear through my discharge chute! I know for sure that hole wasn't there before, so I assume the blade forced that stick clear through the plastic! Is this a common occurrence with these Hi-Vac ..read more

Briggs & Stratton 8hp oil fill tube mystery

So, as mentioned in my introduction, the Yard Flite tractor I bought is missing it's oil dipstick. I've pored over various parts manuals online, and though finding what appears to be the part number I need doesn't come up looking right when I search it. This is what's currently in place on my tractor, with the fuel tank removed--just a bare transparent plastic tube, screw threads into the block down low and no location for an o-ring or threads at the top... I am retired and finally decided to restore my old FORD LGT 100 garden tractor. I live in the Pocono Mountains of PA and have a few acers of land. My old ford did a great job until I started to have problems with the steering. I put it in the Shed and have been using a "Husqvarna made" - Craftsman as the replacement. Looking for replacement/ restoration parts for my Ford and some help in keeping my "Sears-joke" running. Looking forward as being part of this Forum - for friendly help and... LX178 overheating

Hi! I inherited my first riding mower - a John Deere LX178. It's been great until the coolant hose developed a leak. I replaced the coolant hose and refilled the coolant reservoir. There are no visible leaks now however the mower overheated after about 10 minutes of use! I determined that coolant is NOT leaving the reservoir, traveling through the new hose and cooling the engine. I checked for blockages in the new hose and there are none. What could be causing this? A temperature sensor... LX178 overheating ..read more
