In my method, English is Fun!, we don't introduce children to written English before the age of approximately 8. (Sometimes even 9). This may sound strange to many ESL teachers but insisting on early reading and writing of a second language could make learning to read and write the child's native language that much harder. I remember my very first lesson with a group of 6 yr olds. I had been teaching ESL for a while but had never taught it to children.
