Help needed with RX10-iv workflow

I've just upgraded from the Panasonic Fz-2000 to the RX10-iv and am currently in the "is this magic!?" phase of discovery with the camera. It's miles ahead of the Panasonic in every realm ... APART from workflow, by which I mean sorting through images and getting them off the camera. I'm hoping some of you experienced folk might be able to help or at least share with me how you manage this process. To be specific, Panasonic had a feature that allowed you to favourite or star certain images... Read more ..read more

Sony FE 300mm f2.8 OSS G Master Lens

Has anyone considered buying this lens? I have been using the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS for over three years and while it's a good lens, I have been eyeing up an alternative but not able to justify the price tags for either the Sony 400mm or 600mm. The launch of the 300mm GM seems to be an opportunity to step up a level, when coupled with a converter. The 1.4 x converter would provide the equivalent of 420mm with a 3.9mm f stop. It's also an incredibly light lens at 1.4kg, making... Read more ..read more

What I think would be the perfect birding (rather than bird photography) camera

I have been birding for decades with binoculars. A while ago I started photography with a low-end bridge camera (Panasonic Lumix DC-FZ82). I loved the reach and portability, of course, but was frustrated by slow hit-and-miss AF and poor quality in low light. I have since tried the Nikon Coolpix 950 (greater reach but not a lot better IQ in low light, so returned), the Canon RF with RF 100-500mm (which I also returned because the reach wasn't great I thought the Q quite soft at 500mm) and... Battery problems RX10
Birdforum » Sony

I bought my RX10 in January 2020, including two original Sony batteries (of 1020 mAh capacity each). As the camera is known to consume power rather excessively, I bought additional batteries. But this time I went the much cheaper generics way trying three different brands. Meanwhile, after a bit over 3 1/2 years, I notice that the original Sony batteries are no longer reliably holding their power when not in use. Thus, they are often almost empty when I start using them a few months... Read more ..read more

I fully admit right at the start that it is probably user error, but i have changed nothing since i last put the camera away, and picked it up today and AF isnt working at any distance. Tried in manual mode and manual focus didnt work either. I have AEL set to back button AF Limiter is set to full. Fully charged batt. How things have changed since i put it back in it's bag is a mystery, but maybe this has happened to someone else. Tried in AF-C , AF-S, Auto, Shutter priority, Aperture... Read more ..read more

Sony RX-100 various versions

I have a Sony RX-10M4, which I think is superb. However, for many situations it is just too bulky to take along. As a back-up, I have an older Panasonic Lumix FZ-200, and I would now like to replace it with a much more compact Sony RX-100. My present questions circle around which version I should get? They run from around 600 Swiss Francs to double that amount or more. I understand that there was once a major step up, so any advice would be appreciated. I'm aware that the RX100 has a much... Sony RX10 IV for a beginner?

Hi, I am a total newbie to photography. I'm looking to be able to take pictures of local gulls to compare molting, take pictures for identification purposes, maybe share some of them on social media. I've done some homework during the past week or so, and for my uses, I've landed somewhere between a crop sensor camera and a superzoom camera. I mostly travel by bike or by foot, so the weight and size matters. I already carry a TSN883 scope and binos with me, and the camera would be handy on... Read more ..read more

Sony Alpha Cameras Clear Image Zoom
Birdforum » Sony
by RichardHoeg

Sony makes the claim that in addition to optical zoom, their engineers have written algorithms which enhances a limited digital zoom that is equal to optical zoom. In other words, applying "clear image zoom", but not "regular digital zoom" on top of optical zoom yields results equal to cropped optical zoom photos. Clear Image Zoom may only be used up to a 2.0 enlargement factor. Last night while photographing my yard birds, nesting Great Horned Owls, I did a Clear Image Zoom vs Optical Zoom...
