Can't adjust timing because of lobe play.

Hello, I am trying to adjust my timing but no matter how much I turn the plate, the point won't close all the way. I did at once point take the advance rod out to lubricate it. Perhaps I installed it incorrectly. No matter how far I turn the plate it rotates the lobe around the advance rod just as far. Is timing lobe play normal? If not how do I fix it? ≈21k miles Helping a friend with the sale of this motorcycle. He inherited it from his dad (who I understand was the original owner) when he passed away a few years ago. While my friend has maintained the tabs and ridden it a few times since taking possession of it, he isn’t a motorcycle guy and had decided that it is time to let it go. As near as I can tell it has been garage kept its entire life as there isn’t much of the typical corrosion one would expect to see on a bike of this... Read more ..read more

Weird Clutch Issue
Yamaha XS650 Forum

Good afternoon everyone, I'm having a weird clutch issue at the moment. I've since replaced the clutch springs along with new friction plates. The problem I was trying to resolve was a hard to shift, false neutral between what felt like every gear and slipping at high RPMs. Now that I've replaced the plates and springs I think I've resolved the slipping and hard shifting, but I still have the false neutral. Now I have an issue where it seems I have to click up twice to upshift, if not I'll... Read more ..read more

Quick question, grease my rod? (on the bike, not me)

So I have an issue with my revs sticking higher than normal. One thing is, if I blip the throttle up to 2k and let it close, it will hang and suddenly want to go further BY ITSELF and reach up to 4k RPM. This is both in neutral and idling, and in any gear with the clutch pulled in. I did some extensive searching on this site about sticking RPMs and RPMs going up without the throttle open, and I think it's my rod. I'm pretty sure it's not a vacuum leak around the carb manifolds going into... Read more ..read more

Oil weeping past new seal - nightmare

Hello, Appreciate the help so far, thanks. My latest problem with this recent project is a very small oil leak through the crankshaft oil seal into the alternator housing, it is seeping past the new oil seal lip, not from the oil seal housing. I don’t know what has caused it, I had new con rods fitted so the crankshaft has been apart, but the alignment was checked by 2 independent companies, prior to installing, the seal is new and fitted correctly. I seem to have 2 options, either live... Read more ..read more

'77 XS360 flooding on left side at wide open

My 1977 xs360 hasn't been wanting to rev past 7-8000 rpm without sputtering out, you can hear the left cylinder start to crap out. I tracked the issue down to the that side flooding with gas, but only at wide open. I ran it around all day just cruising, pulled the plugs and they both look healthy. A couple minutes of trying to rev it up high and the left plug goes black. I can even pull back the air filter boot and see the carb spitting out fuel when I rev it. I can also shut of fuel flow... Position of maximum points gap?
Yamaha XS650 Forum

Setting static timing this afternoon. I have a question about points gap please. (cam chain tensioner set statically first, engine rotation by hand). My eyesight isn't what it used to be and I'm not confident I have set the points gap at the best position on the cam. I have gapped the points to 0.015" to allow for a bit of heel wear. So just checking the collective experience here if I may. I have the points just opening at the "F" mark. With a wrench at 12 o'clock and the rotor in the F... Read more ..read more
