Hey everyone, I'm facing a frustrating issue with my home's plaster walls due to roof leaks. Every time it rains, water seeps through the roof and damages the plaster, leaving unsightly stains and weakening the structure. I've tried temporary fixes like sealing cracks and applying waterproof coatings, but the problem persists. I'm at a loss on how to tackle this issue effectively. Should I hire a professional roofer to inspect and repair the roof, or are there DIY solutions I could try... Roof Leaks Causing Plaster Damage - Need Advice ..read more

Assessing Old Plaster - Is it Good or Bad?

Hello all, My contractor plastered and painted a room and I now have cracks in the walls. The plaster appears to be blown because it was applied to old plaster. The contractor says it isn't his fault. He claims there is "no way to know if plaster is old" before new plaster is applied. My question: What methods, tests, procedures are use by professional plasterers to assess the condition of plaster on a wall? How does one determine if plaster is too old and a wall needs a full plaster... Assessing Old Plaster - Is it Good or Bad ..read more

Plaster veneer pulling away from the wall along wallpaper seams.

I am an amateur DIYer. My home was built twenty-five years ago and the wall finish appears to me to be plaster veneer over blue board. I’m not the original owner. Several rooms are wallpapered and in many spots the seams are curling, but not in the usual way. Instead of the wallpaper separating from wall, an easy fix with wallpaper border glue, a thin coat of plaster remains adhered to the wallpaper but seperates from the blue board or another layer of plaster. So my question is could you... Plaster veneer pulling away from the wall along wallpaper seams ..read more

Hi, I have a 40-year-old home where some fairly large sections of the sand swirled veneer (i think its diamond) is sagging off of the drywall above. I also have cracks along some of the tape joints as well. Is there any way to secure this plaster back onto the ceiling? It is nearly impossible to find anyone that is good with this stuff around where I live, and if i take it down and try to match it, it will likely look terrible. I have seen products for sale to repair plaster by... Diamond Veneer repairs ..read more

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could advise. I went to see a property to buy but I noticed that the stairs have cracks underneath them, and also the ceiling has cracks in it. Are these a worry? Do they just need filled and replastered or is it a sign of subsidence and structural damage? The house is semi detached built in 2003 and is very very close... HELP! What plaster do you guys prefer for repairing settling cracks? I have been using USG Diamond veneer for years, but I have a builder hollering at me about its potential for cracking. I have never had a recall from using this plaster, but he insists that I change my product. I told him that a controlled temp is more important than my using the Diamond Veneer. He wont listen. Any suggestions? Thx... John ..read more

Hello, New to the forum. I inherited a property in New Mexico (climate/region may be applicable to my scenario) and it was an old building from the 1900's. I hired a contractor to repair the plaster in the building that was heavily cracked and coming down in some places. The scope of work was to remove any old plaster, reinforce around cracks and large removed sections, then apply new plaster and skim coat to a smooth finish. I live out of state and I was not able to oversee the job... Contractor issues, repair plaster walls/ceilings with stucco products, and now needs skimming ..read more
