Deferrals and Disappointments

I am sitting in my living room on an extremely hot evening in New Providence. Just now I found myself staring at the blinking cursor on my laptop and silently berate myself for checking in on my blog for the first time in three weeks. Three weeks ago, the hammer indeed fell as I received the official email from Chicago Marathon that the race would not take place this year. The feeling of disappointment that came over me was surprising as this outcome should have been expected. In the shadows of my hopeful optimism, that nagging suspicion that one of the things I love to in marathon running is ..read more

Week 11 of my #ChicagoMarathon training has come to an end and it has been a week filled with absolutely solid runs. Faster long run paces, stronger hills repeats and just that feeling of being a stronger runner now than I have been in the past. While the uncertainty of whether the marathon will actually place this October still looms over us like the clouds outside New Providence, my resolve to hit the pavement at every opportunity remains unwavered. During my group and personal run training sessions this week, I had the opportunity, and really the joy of watching my team bask in the glow of ..read more

It's sunrise and I decided to take a departure from my usual 3:00 p.m. writing ritual because - full disclosure - I have been off my blog for a few weeks. That's is how life happens sometimes - other aspects of your life take a sudden priority and you find that some of the activities that you enjoy end up taking a back seat. I am smiling as I type because I somehow have to find an analogy about running that speaks to what is going on in life. As a runner, I know that this is how run training goes sometimes too - you have your plan laid out for the weeks ahead and life throws a curve ball into ..read more

Today is the end of Week Seven of my #ChicagoMarathon training plan and somehow this week has been all about everything except my training plan. Don't get me wrong, my workouts went well and I was able to complete all of my runs as scheduled within the recommended pace. It's another week where as far as everyone is concerned, we will be in Chicago on October 11th. This week also brought in some changes in my personal and professional life. I returned to the office on Monday for the first time since the end of March and looking back the work week seemed like a blur. For Run Naturally, the week ..read more

"Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.." Zecharaiah 4:10 Week 6 of my #ChicagoMarathon training plan wrapped up this morning with me running a personal best one mile sprint at a 6'35" pace. It was a week of little rest and recovery as I resumed group run training with Run Naturally, along with a virtual 5K at a 9'07" pace on the Labor Day holiday. As I see fellow marathoners from around the world commence their training cycles, I begin to feel hopeful again that I will tow the line at Grant Park this October. With the Bahamas progressing to Phase 4 ..read more

Usually by this time on a Sunday, I already have my blog post wrapped up and published. It's been a week filled with tension across the world in the midst of the protests and riots stemming from the murder of #GeorgeFloyd. For as much as I hold running close to me as a way to relax my thoughts and often times to distract me from the waves of thoughts that run through my head; I realized that I will not use running to bury my head in the sand. It's appropriate to acknowledge this from the outset of my blog post for the week before I launch into the actual text of my topic. Today wraps up Week 5 ..read more

I'm curled up on love seat (my unofficial writing spot) on another rainy Sunday afternoon in New Providence. Week 4 of my #chicagomarathon training plan is complete and I despite experiencing some aches, it was a pretty good week of training with some personal bests in my speed intervals. After much research, I decided to take that leap of faith and enroll for my Marathon Running Coach Certification. If you have ever seen the way I research before I sign up for a marathon (it's the law school in me), then you will know that deciding on a certification program was no small task. I spent much of ..read more

Week 3 of my #chicagomarathon training is in the books. Writing this, I actually expected to hear that the marathon has been cancelled. I am thankful it has not been and hopeful in my ability to continue training. The week here was filled with inclement weather and I decided to shake things up by completing my long run on Wednesday night before our 9 p.m. curfew #lockdownlife and some rainy weather speed runs. It was a week where I paid closer attention to the content uploaded on my run group's page and where I focused on engaging with my run group members on my social networking platforms. I ..read more

Running While Black

This morning I woke up and headed outside to for a two mile run around my property (I have lost count on how many weekends we have been on a national lock down.) I immediately felt the raindrops fall on my face and my arms and decided to run anyway. I didn't have miles to clock for #chicagomarathon training plan, having completed my required miles on Thursday of last week. But it is Sunday. And a common theme that I have shared on my blog posts is my fondness for Sunday running. The plan was for a short and sweet two mile run to complete the challenge miles that I rolled out for my advanced ru ..read more
