What was the comparable climbing on those two rides? I have given up trying to estimate a distance I can do with the Mahle system. I know I can do 2000m (6600 feet) of climbing with a full battery. Makes little difference what the distance is, as I don't often use the battery on the flat. Statistics: Posted by ChrisF — 26 Apr 2024, 5:50pm ..read more

Two rides of comparable length returned very different battery draw downs. The first started over in Wharfedale , at Kilnsey. It was a very cold day with a strong northerly, coming down valley in our faces. We rode the short hop south to Conistone, then turned 180 degrees, into the breeze and up the back road to Kettlewell. From there we took the main road to Buckden, then forked right the mile or so to the left fork and down to Hubberholme. From here it is quite a steady climb all the way to Beckermonds and the turn for High Greenmfields. Unmfortunately, the "do it yourself cafe" at the end o ..read more

About 85mm wide, and 88 mm from top to bottom. I'd be surprised if many roof carriers will accomodate that. Also they're quite heavy to lift onto a car roof! Thanks. That puts it outside the limits for the Thule ProRide and probably restricts me to a wheel-clamping carrier, which is disappointing but exactly what I needed to know. Are any Boardman e-bike owners able to give me the cross-sectional dimensions of the down tube, please? I'd like to acquire a suitable car roof carrier before buying a Boardman. I'd prefer a carrier with a down tube clamp, but I need the down tube dimensions in order to identify whether a carrier will be suitable. Try Thule 599. Clamps securely by the wheels so there's no frame contact which means it'll fit pretty much any bike easily. Rated up to 20kg. Diagrams/pics on the link: https://www.thule.com/en-gb/bike-rack/r ... e-_-599001 Thanks for that. I'm surprised that it can prevent wobble at the steering with only that sort of clamping at the wheels. But it's Thule and I expect that it can. I'm hoping that either Halfords or a Boardman owner will come back to me with the down tube dimensions, so that I can assess whether the Thule ProRide 591 (which is substantially cheaper) will work. Mass is not an issue. The bike is lighter than my Street Machine, which I can get up there quite happily, and will be lighter still with the battery removed. I had already established before posting that roof-mounting was the right solution for me. Now, about this "all the racks designed for e-bikes". Any examples? Try Thule 599. I'm close to pulling the trigger on the purchase of a Boardman HYB 8.9E. I'll want to be able to get it on the roof of the car, both for getting it home from the shop and for taking it away on holiday. You need to worry less about the dimensions of the bike and more about the all-up weight capacity of the rack and mounting hardware (plus the issue of lifting the bike onto the roof as well). All the racks designed for e-bikes will be fine in terms of dimensions - manufacturers long ago redesigned clamps for fat MTB and e-bike tubing and tyres - but the weight and lifting is the main concern ..read more
