It’s been almost 26 years since Hideaki Anno’s Neon Genesis Evangelion was released and changed anime forever. If that seems like hyperbole, simply look at MyAnimeList.net and see what came out before and what came after. It’s been well-documented that it was a key player in paving the way for more original – non-adapted ..read more

Anime Quarterly

Shingo Natsume, director of this season’s Sonny Boy, is an exciting name to hear, even if most know him from just one thing. After all that “one” thing just so happens to be One Punch Man. But before Natsume blew minds with One Punch Man‘s insane roster of talented animators, he blew minds with Space ..read more

“Wonder Egg Tuesday.” Next to “Dynazenon Friday”, that was the most hyped day of the week for anime this year thus far. Wonder Egg Priority got 2021 off to an incredible start, exploring grim subject matter with a film-level presentation. Several friends with who I shared the show couldn’t tell it was a TV series ..read more

WIT has long tried to distance itself from Attack on Titan, NOT because they hate it, but because they didn’t want it to define them. Funnily enough, their next big project after Titan‘s first season, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, was highly reminiscent of it. The big difference was that it was an original series ..read more

Toei Animation has just announced a brand-new Dragon Ball Super film slated for sometime next year. That said, it was accidently leaked last week on Toei’s Europe website. Details are sparse, but we can expect to see many of our favorites in the mix alongside possible new foes for Goku and co to face off against. Author Akira Toriyama will be heavily involved in its story and dialogue, much to the same tune as the previous film. He shuts himself up from talking about the plot in his comment, but does hype fans up by noting the “extreme and entertaining bouts” may feature an unexpected charact ..read more

(Near-) Infinite Fun; SK8 the Infinity Review
Anime Quarterly

Hiroko Utsumi’s SK8 the Infinity caught my eye quickly, and it isn’t hard to see why. Yukari Gotou’s color design has left a mark on some of my all-time favorite shows and it’s no less stunning here. Additionally, this show doesn’t shy away from a spectacle that stretches suspension of disbelief to its breaking point. It commits wholeheartedly to a melodramatic skating scene that means everything to these characters. In my first post about SK8, I mentioned that it reminded me of the first sports anime that truly hooked me years back: Kuroko no Basket. To me, it was the Dragonball Z of sports a ..read more

After seven years, fans can finally say hello to everyone’s favorite sometimes-dragon-gym-leader, Iris, again. Pokémon Journeys: The Series is bringing her back in an upcoming episode set to premiere in Japan next month, according to Comic Natalie. The character, which hasn’t been seen since the Black & White days, which ended back in 2014, was the female travel companion to Ash while he was training to the very best in Unova. The episode is clearly centered around her battling Ash’s Dragonite as both are a part of the World Coronation Series, but what isn’t clear if she will be a characte ..read more
