I found this article about the history of Merengue by Sydney Hutchinson. She’s an ethnomusicologist who received her Ph.D. with a dissertation about Merengue in Dominican communities and has written various articles on Latin American music. A HISTORY OF MERENGUE: POPULAR MUSIC OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - PERICO RIPIAO & MERENGUE TIPICO available online at iaso records by Sydney Hutchinson The article is unfinished, sadly. It says it is missing a third segment about “Guitar and... About Merengue and its cultural history ..read more

So I’m probably about two months of learning with the combination of a few privates and then classes I’ve been taking for the last month and a half. I will definitely say it has not been an experience. for every time that I think I made progress I go to class and I end up two steps back. Not expecting to have learned it to be easy. apparently I’ve gotten no rhythm. can never the whole “on the balls of your feet” correctly and then when it comes to partner work. I honestly hate doing it. I... Two months in and it has not been a fun experience ..read more

Ray Barretto’s “Acid Salsa”

“Acid” is the name of the album by Ray Barretto, which you can listen to in this playlist. But I’ve been reading about the term of “acid salsa” and wanted to discuss it here. “Raymond” Barretto Pagán was an NY Puerto Rican composer percussionist, an emblem of Latin Jazz, who got to play for Tito Puentes and alongside Charlie Parker, among other legends. Many consider that acid is not a subgenre as much as a term, used to describe incorporations of jazz... Ray Barretto’s “Acid Salsa ..read more

Orquesta Son Mujeres, “Salsa in the body of a woman”

I wanted to share with you one of my favorite bands currently. This is an all-female amazing orchestra called Son Mujeres from Cali, Colombia. They're relatively new on the music scene, but they sound impeccable, with a tropical flavor and a refined Colombian sound. They are led by the talented Monica Castro, who was part of the '90s all-female group Son de Azúcar. They're all about embracing the essence of salsa with a twist - they call it "Salsa en cuerpo de mujer" (salsa in the body of a... Orquesta Son Mujeres, “Salsa in the body of a woman ..read more

Recent post by DJ Renzo, a DJ in the Washington, DC area - Late 90s - 2008: The Puerto Rican Salsa Era. The majority of the music was either Puerto Rican or New Yorican. That’s because most of the DJs were older Puerto Rican dudes. Most folks just rolled with that being the baseline. - 2009 - 2020: The “Mambo/Guaguanco”/Rare Salsa Era: this is the era where a lot of DJs/collectors started to introduce less popular, more underground, more rare/exotic sounds - feeding many folk’s... Hello, Could you please identify the title or the kind of salsa of the DVD 1 of Salsa a la Cubana (website "salsaville") for the part #8 and #9 "small camina". It has those lyrics (approximate): Nina, a mi manera como es (pero donde) ay ay ay que lo busco y no lo encuentro ... Ando buscando caballero A mi manera como dice If one of you have the full DVD the music credits may be written at the end. (I hope.) I would like to share the audio but it's not possible because I don't have... Salsa a la cubana ..read more

Salsa Socials in Switzerland

Salsa is strong in Switzerland since a long time, both immigrant latinos and the swiss maintain a vibrant scene. Both cuban and linear style are strong, with differences between cities. I only describe the three biggest cities of the german speaking part of the country, the other parts I don't know as they are too far for me for a dancing night. Switzerland is expensive for foreigners (not for the swiss themselves, as they earn in swiss francs and lots of them): there are no cheap hotels /... Salsa Socials in Switzerland ..read more
