I wanted to post in appreciation of Oumi Janta, Senegalese and German roller skater whose beautiful videos became a sensation some years ago, changing her life and propelling her as an internet star. Maybe you, like me, came across this first video sometime in 2020: Oumi had been filming and sharing her moves for a while before that video blew up and reached some celebrities like Viola Davis, Janelle Monáe, and Reese Witherspoon, who further divulged her talent. After... Read more ..read more

Various dancers in social media

I found this article published in honor of International Dance Day… What I found interesting about it was that, aside from promoting dancing events in Europe for the week, it listed some famous dancers from different genres that you could follow on social media. You can read the article by this title in Euronews (I can't link it) but below I share the list of performers they recommend checking out: “Happy International Dance Day! Here’s how you can celebrate (even if you’ve two left feet)”... Read more ..read more

Leaders. How was your Tango journey?
Dance Forums

Hello, just curious how was your journey as leaders in Tango? How long it took you? So, I am in a big city with various Tango studios. I've been taking tango group lessons for 6 months. The issue is at practicas there are no beginners. I take lessons in 2 studios and out of 30 beginners taking lessons, I am probably the only one who goes to practicas. Other beginner followers don't go to practicas for various reasons, (other commitments etc.) At practicas, I only see followers at... Read more ..read more

Can't Dance With Wife or Best Friend
Dance Forums

I've been dancing seriously for about a year now and feel like I'm just emerging from Beginner Hell into Intermediate Hell. I'm definitely not a natural and will never be a great dancer, but I lead passably well everyone in my scene except the two people I want to dance with the most: my wife and my best friend. My wife and I started taking classes together. We've always done well with other people but are constantly in each other's way when we dance together. The... Read more ..read more

Dancehall dance moves

Is anyone here a dancehall expert? I have love for it as a genre, love listening to it and have wondered many times where I could attend classes of this particular style… But then again, watching it just makes it evident to me that I need to train more core strength to perform it well Forget rhythm, look at the sheer strength some of these steps take! This is Jamaican dancer Chrissy, @chrisschoreo on social media. Someone commented on this video “My thighs are... Read more ..read more

Getting into cabaret for lifts, but can't dance with my partner currently - how do I practice?

Hello, Context: I'm a guy, and my dance partner is also a guy. We do amateur. I recently started working on cabaret with my boyfriend, and I've been working on lifts. However, there is a bit of a discrepancy in location - we live about 500 miles apart from each other. I was considering reaching out to various ballet studios to practice, but I wouldn't want it to seem like I am trying to steal a student or anything. How should I find someone to work on lifts with, and do you all have any... Read more ..read more

"Ballroom AT" - Argentine Tango under the umbrella of Ballroom associations

ProgressNotPerfection said: To me, “ballroom AT” is an oxymoron... Click to expand... I'll take PnP's aptly put account to explore this special side of tango. Firstly, the accredited ballroom studios are currently not just limiting themselves to the ten classic dances, but are increasingly offering everything that is successful in the wild, such as Argentine tango. The teachers are qualified and trained in crash courses by the dance sport associations or the national dance teacher associations. And they are mostly... Read more ..read more

Pro/am teachers who “actively compete pro/pro” vs “never competed pro/pro” vs “retired from competing pro/pro”
Dance Forums

This discussion started in the pre-comp disorder thread, and it seems really interesting to me: the differences between taking lessons from an actively competing pro, a pro who has never competed professionally, and a pro who is retired from professional competition. My teacher retired from professional competition many years ago (definitely before 2016; maybe long before that [note to self: ask him!]). He does exclusively pro/am now. I don’t have experience taking lessons from pros... Read more ..read more
