Having exhausted most of my talents in woodworking, I want to try "one more thing" (as Columbo says) - and that is INTARSIA !!! I've been scrolling through the internet for "free" beginner's software to convert photos and sketches to usable line art for the scroll saw. Just out of curiosity, what do you actually use ?? Hello, This is my first post ever on any forum! I am a self-taught woodworker and wood carver and after using my flexcut carving knife for a while, it developed many chips and knicks so I decided it was time to sharpen it. I have DMT diamond stones as well as several water stones that I use. I believe I pressed too hard initially and created a very large burr that was difficult to get rid of. After it looked like I finally got the burr gone from honing, I went to use it on walnut wood... Sharpening knife help ..read more

Hello Woodworkers, Been three long years since my last post. Since then, I have re finished a grandfather's clock. Now that I'm retired. I've been chip carving and also carving in the round. The piece that I am working on now is a coat of arm. I'm working on the lettering that is approx. 1/4" in height. the medium that I'm using is Basswood. My problem is that the cuts are so small that the fibers are spreading apart, making the lettering look sloppy. I have thought about how to get... Micro carving, Keeping the wood fibers together. Hi everyone. I was hoping someone could maybe help us to identify this piece please. It was left to my wife by her parents 3 years ago, they had owned it for many years but we have no idea what it is, what its made of, type of wood etc, or even what you call this type of woodcraft, if there is a special name for it. We can't seem to find much really on the Internet. I'm asking because we are looking to sell it, but reluctant to advertise it without knowing a few details first. I love the... I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this so if not then can someone move it to the correct one please? I have been making some reindeer using my Startrite 301S bandsaw. Just from odd lumps of whatever I can lay my mits on. It's from a very simple plan and only takes about 20 minutes plus the sanding. This is all the plan is Cut the fore and aft part first and then tape it... Bandsaw reindeer ..read more

Hello Boys, Hope you are all enjoying the season. I have several quality rasp files for rough work. I have been unable to find quality rifflers for fine work. I have purchased a couple sets over the years but I think they are not so good. Can I get a recommendation or two? Thanks ..read more

Hello I am new to the forum and to wood carving in general. I am carving an old wood guitar and I am wanting to remove a lot of material. I am using a router bit now. It is getting the job done but very slowly. What is the best bit to use to remove a lot of material from a stock wooden guitar body? also I just thought of another question. I want to make it fret less. I was thinking about using the left over material from the body with some super glue instead of wood filler. Any thoughts... Best dremel bit for big chunking ..read more

I'm not there yet with my sharpening. I have made progress but need consistency. I have been using the wood side of my Flexcut slip strop. What happens is an accumulation of compound which means I am doing nothing. How hard do I need to press or is my technique just C-rap I have seen some guys bend leather but if I get no satisfaction using wood, choice is not my problem because leather is softer. Can I use an actual stone from the driveway? Thanks ..read more
