Do I really need gH for South American Fish?

Do I really need to add salt to my water to get the gH up? And, if so, what's the best approach to doing so? New tank setup. Planning on Green Terror tank (tank 65g, about 1 1/2" sand and nothing much that displaces water volume, pH 6.8, all other parameters (nitrates, nitrites, ammonia) are in the green [undetectable limits]. I'm trying to understand the water hardness tolerance for South American fish. I keep seeing they require (or tolerate?) 5 to 15gH!! My tap water is very soft... So yesterday I saw my gar and I noticed it was swimming upsidown. I thought maybe he was just acting funny. I got home (after school) and he was bent in a V shape and still swimming upsidown. I assumed he was dead, but since it was late I didn't take him out. Sooooo today I went back to take it out and I noticed that it was still breathing and fins were still moving. So it still is bent in a V, swimming uspidown...but its alive... My camera is broken so I can't take a pic but I think it... I think my gar is almost dead ..read more

I’m new to keeping an aquarium. I inherited my dad’s African Cichlids two months ago. They were established in his aquarium and moved to one I set up. I moved items over from his tank, using his filters, and cycled my tank for two weeks before moving his stock. Initially I lost a few, probably from stress, but had seemed to have leveled out. Last week I noticed one of my stronger males had a red base on his front fins (maybe it’s his gills). I later noted it on a few others but not all fish... Red Gills ..read more
