Female Convict Cichlid Being Attacked
Aquaria Central

So I have a pair of convict cichlids, that bred for the first time when I got them 3 weeks back. Yesterday night I saw the male chasing the female here and there, and I assumed it was regular cichlid behavior as they do that. Today around 12pm I checked in on the fry (they were with the parents) and found the female hiding at the top of the tank, her tail completely nipped off, and her fins torn. She was heavily breathing and could barely move. I quickly moved the male to a different tank... Female Convict Cichlid Being Attacked ..read more

Tank

This tank is over thirty yrs old and is biologically very well established. It is 140 gallons, and runs on biofitration balls. I think in all the years I’ve had it, I’ve did a water change maybe two or three times, don’t use store bought chems for anything. What it comes down to is you need to have the proper environment for whatever it is our keep. There are more fish in there than you think, but don’t forget, a one inch fish needs a minimal of ten gallons to flourish. It may not look... Tank ..read more

Hi, just curious if anyone knows why ponds cycle so funky. Here’s what I mean. I recently set up a 59x40x24” stock tank pond and I seeded it with lots of established media from a few of my other large-ish tanks. I have a 13” Midas, 15” spotted gar, and a 9” bala. The ammonia is bouncing around from .25 to .5. Nitrites are doing the same. No nitrates It’s been up for a 3 weeks. I’ve used this same method on many traditional aquariums ranging from 2g-180g without even a hint of a cycle. A... Cycling oddities ..read more

How do you light your 60" tanks?
Aquaria Central

My question is this: since few manufacturers make 60" lights, what sizes do you get and how do you mount/hang/overlap them? I have a 60" wide 24" deep tank that needs better lighting. I currently have a 60" Dustin's Double left over from an older tank which doesn't provide nearly enough light. I have another 60" x 18" deep that has a pair of Fluval 2.0 48" lights which overlap in the middle for about 2' providing a bright zone in the center that the plants love and still plenty...
