500 Mate NC Requirements

The NMC Checklist states I need 720 NC, 360 over 50 GRT, 90 bridge keeping plus BST and AFF to get a 500 Mate NC. Is that all I need to then apply to the REC to test? I am going for my Mate of Tow after. What other STCW classes do I need to take to have little to no limitations to stay within NC waters on the wire towing up and down the west coast? 2 posts - 2 participants Read full topic ..read more

Forums are a dying niche from the early days of the internet. There was a reddit thread the other day about “what do you miss about the old internet” and a lot of people were missing forums and chat rooms. gCaptain is a niche within a niche, perhaps a testimony to the mariners commitment to doing things the way we’ve always done them - with technology from the 90’s. r/Maritime has 13.2k members and apparently had over 100k visitors last year. Dont know what the stats are here, I’m seeing 14,000 monthly visists but who knows how many actuve users that is. The conversation here is just as usefu ..read more

Hot or Not: Steven Koonin Questions Conventional Climate Science and Methodology

I consider myself lucky to find this thread not closed yet by the Fellow wiith " quid est veritas" written in green on his Cheng’s hard hat. My humble suggestion if I may of course, He changes that to " semper veritas " as cancelling/shutting down/muting those quoting dissenting opinions on the issue in question, suggests inclination to be in favour of " veritas mea melior est quam tua " . Which is very convenient for those who have the power to dismiss and/or cancel. I am sure hard hat has enough space to accommodate it and red colour may turn out most appropriate. Military Sealift Command questions

It’s surprisingly hard to find clear information about MSC. I hope someone can answer a few questions I have. Will I be able to transfer to an AB from a supply utility man? I already have ab special from tugboats but not RFPNW or able seafarer deck. How are the rotations? I heard they increased the time off to two months. What sort of accommodations are there for communication with friends and family ashore? Is there internet available for use? Phones? I appreciate any answers you all can give me as well as any other advice you may have. 2 posts - 2 participants Read full topic ..read more

SIU UA program and alternatives

I plan on applying for the unlicensed apprentice program in Piney Point, Maryland and I was worried about the difficulty of the math test and where I could maybe find some practice problems similar to those on the test since it has been years since I’ve taken a math test. Another question I have is in case I still get rejected, are there any success stories that someone who didn’t take the unlicensed apprentice route would like to share? I am very aware of the many other schools available that offer private courses for the necessary certifications and if anyone here knows of any schools close ..read more

I am looking for an anchor in the mid-Atlantic area in about the 300-600 pound range or maybe a little heavier. If not dockside near Baltimore it needs to fit in a pickup truck and not be all that expensive. Ugly is fine. Any ideas? Thanks! 1 post - 1 participant Read full topic ..read more

Does anyone have insights into work in Portland as a mariner? I may be moving there and am not familiar with the industry there. I am looking at either local ship based work or shoreside work. Have master unlimited, towing endorsement, dp, security clearance, and working on a master’s degree in the transportation industry. Any insights would be much appreciated. 2 posts - 2 participants Read full topic ..read more
