New methods in cultural anthropology

I am a graduate TA in cultural anthropology. I am helping design a new course for the fall, and the professor wants me to search for new methods in cultural anthropology published in the last ~5 years. It can be "any method, but must have a specific focus, not a passing claim" (her words). I'm going to dig into the scholarly search engines and consult my department librarian, but thought I might ask here, too! Thanks very much ..read more

In need of advice

I’m not sure if these sort of questions are allowed or discouraged, if so I will delete this post no problem. So I’m transferring universities for my master’s degree to be able to spoil myself and go down the path of linguistic anthropology. Having finished my bachelor’s in fine arts I’ve decided to go with the aspects of art which concerns communication, specifically through textile uses in everyday life of certain cultures of the Middle East, specifically regions of Iran. I’m interested in the classification of certain patterns that share a similarity to rugs and textiles found on the Balka ..read more

Language requirement question-Any linguistic anthropology people here?

I am interested in applying for linguistic anthropology PhD programs. Stupid question maybe, but I wonder whether being proficient in the language of the region of my interest/my research subjects would be a requirement for admission... Another thing I wonder about is whether the ethnic group of interest the POI should be exactly the same as that of mine or it can be just roughly of the same region (for instance, both in East Asia but of different peoples/groups). Thanks ..read more

Question Regarding Application Error

Hey. I just had an issue on which I am freaking out. In one of my applications, there was a section for 'Specialization/Subfield' where I had to choose sociocultural (for me). I think I missed it by mistake and that section shows blank when I log into my application. Will this affect my application badly? Should I mail the grad admission assistant to let them know about this and whether they could consider my application under sociocultural? Is emailing them necessary or they would anyway understand my subfield when they read my SOP? Please let me know what you people ..read more

A question about an anecdote I heard long ago

I remember reading a book, a long time ago, about a bunch of anthropologists and such who visited one of those pacific islanders.... (I'm not sure which one. Indigenous. No electricity. Majority seafaring and gets most of the food from the sea). Anyway, several of these anthrpologists (or researchers?) decided to help them out. Gave them some technology. Because they fished everyday (because the hot and humid climate was not good for preserving food), they got them solar powered fridges. A few months later, they realized that the fridges were not being used. Upon being questioned, the locals ..read more

Concentration Application Question

I am applying to a program that offers sociocultural, biological, and archaeological anthropology.  If I applied for biological anthro, but if they think Id be better suited in sociocultural, would they: A. offer acceptance, but only if I do sociocultural, or B. Reject me because I applied for biological and I don't fit their needs for biological. But they might suggest sociocultural, but I'd have to apply to that next year   I thought of including both biological and sociocultural in my SOP but then I'm not sure if that looks bad either (indecisiveness ..read more

Any update on any of your applications for 2022 grad school in Anthropology? I have applied to only three schools (and am finishing up application for another now) this year because I'm in the middle of a lot of stuff while still pursuing my master's at my home country. But I did select the 4 schools on the basis of maximum alignment of my research interests with the department and it's faculties. I'm just curious to know if any of you have heard from any schools regarding anything, including interviews or so. Let us know here? I haven't heard from any yet, although I know it might be boderlin ..read more

Reaching out to PIs... worth it at this late stage?

Hey all... recently finished my PhD applications to 10 anthropology programs in the US (I'm a domestic student currently in an anthro MA program at a big ~Ivy~ university). I worked hard on my applications and got good feedback on my documents but with all the chaos of this semester (coursework overload, family issues, attending class on campus for the first time as a commuter student after a year fully online) I was pretty down to the wire, adding and dropping schools at the last minute, rushing some forms and why-I-want-to-go-here statements (not good I know). This is all just to say I haven ..read more
