Hi all I've been a train enthusiast for most of my life and am very glad to meet so many like-minded people. I'm actually auctioning off a large collection of railway books and other materials with a special focus on South Africa. If you're interested the auction is now live and you can check it out here: https://www.bernardiauctioneers.co.z...ay-literature/ Hope you enjoy the collection and looking forward to chatting about all things train-related on the forum! Hi Folks Hello! I'm looking to go down memory lane and put together the route we took in the early 1970's and if possible retravel it, between Windsor and Enfield Town railway station. As a kid i remember that tube travel was involved as part on the journey. Maybe with a change? I can't remember which station we used in Windsor, or the number of changes. I remember a ticket office in London might have had a grey memorial plack of names from the war behind it?? Very fuzzy . Also one of the platforms (possibly the underground) might have been partially open to the sky. Maybe wrong. Part o ..read more

I am translating a 2023 novel from French into English: Mécano, by Mattia Filice. Written by a TGV driver about a TGV driver, about 70% in free verse. Sometimes, rarely, I come across a highly technical passage, in which case I get help from French railway workers on Le web des Cheminots. This particular passage needs to be put into colloquial American railway worker speech. I would appreciate your help with it. What I have now is my translation of the explanatory "civilian" version I received from a SNCF representative. The context is a briefing of the driver by the "Maneuver Agent", standard ..read more

I left London in 1959. Have resided since in N.Z. Was a keen trainspotter in the nineteen fifties - at Wood Green Station (now Alex. Palace?) and visted Palace Gates Station which was basically a 'sleepy hollow' alongside Wood Green at that time. A question if I may- one of my 'spotting' spots, was over the fence at Dagmar Road which overlooked where the line branched of to Bowes Park via an overbridge and the workshops (now Hitachi). Late fifties, there was a siding established that ran along that fence line of Dagmar Crescent. I revisited in 2004 and that siding had (long) gone, but what did ..read more

The Railways of Oakengates

East Shropshire is well known as the ‘cradle of the Industrial Revolution’ with iron works, coal mines and furnaces all well established by 1760. Oakengates is a small town situated in the former Shropshire industrial area, and is roughly midway between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton, which has now been subsumed into the new town of Telford. Prior to absorption into Telford, the town had a population of around 11,500, which made it the third largest settlement in the county after Shrewsbury and Wellington. The town found itself at the centre of a network of railways which included a LNWR main l ..read more
