Exact same problem here, coughs and splutters on initial coldstart almost stalls then catches itself and picks up revs usually 2 or 3 time in first 20 seconds. Then runs fine, turn it off and start for a second time and it's fine. I have replaced spark plugs with new Bosch plugs but no different. Sounds like you have thrown more parts at it than me, do you get a fault code if scanned, I have a P101B interested to see if your code is the same. I was fixing vaccum leak from the return oil hose from ccv (for x5 2003 which has same m54 engine as e46) And i fixed the leak but now i get a white smoke smell like unburnt oil I also noticed there is an un attached hose (its a bit stiff) that goes all the way down to the left of the oil bottom (not attached to oil deep stick bottom) Here is the video Could it be i forgot to attach that hose to somwwhere? I am wondering if anyone has ever had any experience completely rewiring/hardwiring a 2002 330ci starter in a automatic for it to turn over and run, completely forgetting the EWS 3 module if possible. The two thick black and black and blue wires on the EWS connector won't let it crank either, I tried the fuse trick with a 30 amp fuse and connecting the two with a wire it just don't work everything has the proper 12 volts though. I know this subject has been discussed, but I've read SO many threads of people over analyzing sudden low compression no starts. Timing this, sensors that, when often times its just cylinder wash down. Here's my story: Tried to start my 2004 330xi one morning and it ran for about 10 seconds, died and wouldn't start again. I have an interesting fault that occurs when starting the engine. At first it idles roughly and you can sense the ECU making to make adjustments to try to get a smoother idle. If i try to rev it a little, it gets a bit worse and results in the engine icon displayed on the instrument cluster. However, if i turn the engine off and back on with ibn a few seconds the cars idle fine. The engine has done 186k miles.
