How much bracing is adequate for a .5" thick MDF tower?

I'm building a TMWWWW tower kit with 5.5" drivers. I was a bit surprised to learn that the entire kit, including the baffle, is only .5" thick MDF (of course I should have known from this drawing, but I wasn't paying attention). The good news is that there's quite a bit of internal bracing, see below. Although the upper TM section of the baffle looks like it could use more support, so I dunno. So what do you think, is this kit lacking due to the .5" mdf? Or are the braces adequate? Also, I'm probably going to add some side-to-side dowel braces across the large unsupported regions. Let's say ..read more

1.5 Way RS100-8 on Butcher Block Cabinet.

Decided to build some different speakers for the office. Going to go with a 2.1 setup and will put these up on the wall on either side of the TV in there. The sub will be a E180HE-44 in a tapped horn providing good loading from 25-75hz and usable response from 20-80hz. Going to use the Dayton DSP-408 as as bluetooth receiver/DA/DSP/Crossover and a pair of cheap mini-amps (A07) to drive the works. Here's some photos of the project. I don't have a ton to say about it. I think it's fairly self explanatory... It's a wooden box with a crossover/correction network, R100-8 drivers and some 260-478 p ..read more

Center Channel Bass Blocker
Techtalk

I am building a center channel with 4-4" speakers and a tweeter. The mid-woofers are all 4 ohm, to be wired in an 8 ohm configuration. Being as they're smaller than my mains, subs, and surrounds, I'd like to put a bass blocker inline in the crossover network. The trouble is, I can't find a calculator for such an item. I don't want less than 200 hz to enter the speaker. Can someone help ..read more

New LCR Build Advice...

Hi Everyone, I've long been a member of this forum but I have not been active for some years now. The beautiful woodworking posted by some members of this group inspired me to move away from speaker building and focus on furniture building for a while I've just completed a new TV console table and now i'm trying to decide on what speakers might be appropriate. To my disappointment, i searched "diy speaker kits" on PartsExpress and only 3 kits came up? Has the hobby died down or PE shifted their focus? I also see that meniscus audio is closed for good :-( Looks like Madisound is still around wi ..read more

Dynaco A25 clones with parts from PE
Techtalk

Recently a friend gave me some 3-way speakers with no-name drivers and woofer foam rot but the cabinets are beautiful walnut veneer. Another friend turned me on to the Dynaco A25 replacement drivers at PE and suggested I try building some A25 clones. "Dynaclones". Most of the parts were from PE. The others were parts I had on hand or sourced elsewhere. The first job was to close off the tweeter hole, modify the mid hole to accept the new tweeter and make an "aperiodic slot" in the front baffle. Some internet research found that while most A25s had the slot on the bottom, some had it on top so ..read more

Capable shallow home theater speaker build options?

I see some options for shallow speakers on the commercial side. Take for example Ascendo's, Dali, Golden Ear etc. But most are either pretty expensive or have really small drivers. Are there any designs out there that could be made into around a 6 inch deep cabinet but still use either a 6,8, or 10 inch driver? Even a coaxial would be okay ..read more

Amiga upgrade throughout the years

Paul Carmody's Amiga Kit was my first build. I started to build the kit in 2014. At the time I hardly knew a capacitor form a resistor. I just knew that I want to build a speaker kit. I built the Amiga's and was very happy with the sound quality (SQ). I went on to build Bagby's Tango and the Overnight Sensations and helped build the Jasmines Redux by JSR. By 2016, I had decided to upgrade the Amigas to the Core's. The Core upgrade uses the original RS180 mid-woofer and the old, I believe peerless, RS28F tweeter and redesigned crossover. The new PE RS28F version will not work. I hope that Paul ..read more

Help with NOTCH FILTER

I'd like to reduce upper bass output of a bluetooth speaker I built. Box is a bit small for the 10-inch dual woofers I used. Woofers are 8-ohm, each Upper bass peaks around 150 Hz. I'd like to center notch filter at 150 Hz. If I could get a -5dB to -10dB attenuation at 150Hz, that would be perfect! If I could get an effective range of 75 Hz to 300 Hz, that would be awesome. But, I won't be picky at this point. Any attenuation is an improvement. I need one notch filter per channel, for 2 channels (one 10-inch woofer per ch). Each woofer has a 1st Order 2.22mH crossover (about 600Hz). I do ..read more

Help with rew

Any suggestions very appreciated... I tried measuring my main audio response from my couch. I just wanted to see what I was hearing. REW is on my laptop. I have an imm-6 mic plugged into an external USB card. REW has both mic cal file and a cal file for the soundcard. Using extension TRRS cords, I placed the mic directly where I typically sit, mic mounted to a stand, facing up, for omni-directional pickup. Output from soundcard goes directly into AUX input on receiver. I took a measurement of my receiver and front main speakers. Duration 1M (28.8sec). I have read that longer sweeps offer bett ..read more
