A car collision left a 56-year-old pedestrian dead in Hayward Friday night, police said.  The crash, which someone reported at around 10:23 p.m., happened near the intersection of Tennyson Road and Lustig Court. A surveillance camera captured a Hayward man confront a would-be thief trying to steal his truck in the middle of the night. Francis Jones and his wife received an alert from their surveillance system indicating someone was in their truck at 2:30 a.m. last week. Barefoot and half asleep, Jones darted out the door to confront the suspects. “I didn’t have a plan when I ran outside the door,” Jones said. “I just saw people in the car. All lanes of southbound Interstate 880 in Hayward reopened Friday morning after an overturned big-rig shut down the freeway for hours, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash occurred just north of Highway 92 and blocked all lanes of southbound I-880 just as the morning commute was getting started, the CHP said. A police officer was injured while chasing suspects fleeing a break-in at an apparent illegal marijuana grow site early Wednesday in Hayward, authorities said. Witnesses alerted police about 5:35 a.m. to armed suspects breaking into a building in the 2500 block of West Winton Road, an industrial area near the Hayward Regional Shoreline. A now-dead serial rapist and murderer has been identified as a suspect in two brutal East Bay killings from the 1970s, according to law enforcement officials. Police in both Newark and Hayward said modern DNA testing technology enabled them to identify Fred Bernard Farnham as a suspect in the rape and beating deaths of 59-year-old Nellie Hicks and 48-year-old Theresa Pica. Hicks was allegedly killed in her Newark home on May 10, 1972 by Farnham, who police believe entered through a back door. A pedestrian was killed Monday evening on Interstate Highway 580 in Hayward, according to California Highway Patrol.  Officers were sent to the area of I-580 eastbound and the connector to state Highway 238 at about 6 p.m. on a report of a two-vehicle collision involving a male pedestrian.  The man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased, CHP said.  The crash is still being investigated, but CHP believes that the man may have been involved in a separate collision on I-580 westbound before he was hit.  CHP will release more information as it becomes available ..read more

Police in Hayward on Wednesday arrested a man suspected in a fatal shooting that occurred that afternoon. At about 3:25 p.m., officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 21000 block of Foothill Boulevard. Police arrived and found a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A man suspected in the shooting was arrested at the scene, police said.
