I sold my big Powermatic 3520 just before Covid hit and decided as I was no longer interested in selling stuff I would downsize to a smaller lathe and get back some of the space in the shop. Since then I’ve not turned much but the little Record Coronet Herald lathe https://stockroomsupply.com/collecti...vel-head-lathe performed really well and I have no complaints. Then 2 weeks ago I saw a Youtube video of a father and daughter unpacking a new Nova Nebula lathe and showing off some of the features. Intrigued that such a lathe had come on the market I went looking for more info. It has everyth ..read more

How interchangeable are bench plane parts?

The short version: I have a less-common size of Sargent bench plane in a damaged-but-usable state. I assume a blade made to fit a Stanley plane of the same width will work with it, but can I swap in a Stanley frog? The long version, with backstory: A year ago, this noob had no decent hand plane. I'd inherited a Stanley smoother (I think a #3, probably made around 1980) of the variety with the rough castings and painted-over frog seat, but was never able to get decent shavings out of it even after I did my best to clean and sharpen it. Of course, my technique probably sucks, but I didn't thi ..read more

Planning to build my first dinning table and got a few 3" slabs of black cherry. I'm at the stage of dressing those by cutting off the life edges but wondering how other people are doing that. I'm thinking to buy a 10 1/4" circular saw for that as the next step is to run those on a 6" jointer. Any other idea? Thanks ..read more

Mortise too deep? Start over?

Building a garden bench for my wife for next to our pond. Attached is one side of what the bench is *supposed* to look like. The design is a spin-off of one made by Natsuki Ishitani (of Ishitani Furniture on YouTube). I wanted curved legs and the idea is that the curve was *supposed* to start 3" down from the bottom of the bench to allow for the short apron pieces to fit into mortises in the leg... Unfortunately, I made two mistakes. 1) I routed the mortise too deep because... 2) I extended the curve all the way to the top and did *not* stop 3" down to account for the short apron pieces (hope ..read more
