Do you think this has a significant amount of sugar in it that I would over carbonate ..read more

Just noticed my Hops are coming up like crazy. Should I prune all of them? From what I understand, you want to prune back all the first shoots, and then pick two or three of the strongest shoots that emerge after that. Correct ..read more

Last year my hops came up about the first of March, which was about two weeks earlier than in 2022. This year they've gone back to their regular programming poked through about 1.5 weeks ago, on/about March 20. They're 6" - 12" tall. As in the past, Goldings were the first to make an appearance, with Cascade about a week later. Just finished stringing my grand total of four lines and will set up the watering system either in the next couple days or when I get back here the week of Apr 7.... Homegrown Hops 2024 ..read more

Mods: I wasn't sure whether to put this here or in the beyond beer section. I decided here becuase it deals with making it at home, so... If it doesn't belong, OK to move. So I heard this morning on the radio that West Virginia has passed a law legalizing home distillation of spirits. Up to 5 gallons per person, 10 gallons per home with 2 or more adults. Per NPR... What i know: Spunding is the natural carbonation. by brewers using a device called a spunding valve that allows for the setting of the head pressure in a fermentation vessel to predetermined level. What iI would like to understand /confirm: (i) If the brewer is using a secondary tank (rather than unitanks) can spunding be done in the secondary tank by applying counter pressure? (ii) Can 'full 'carbonation be achieved by spunding and does this depending on the plato level when... Trying to understand spunding ..read more
