Hello all! Not sure if anyone here remembers me - my last post was a couple of years ago. I used to post quite lengthy, philosophical discussions on technique, self-defence, and martial arts philosophy. Anyone still around that remembers me? Well, to cut a long story short, work commitments, home commitments, toddler herding commitments all contributed to making 'continuing training' an impossibility. Things are looking even less realistic since we had a son in 2011. Neither of the... What I've been up to ..read more

Hello everyone! I don't know if anyone here remembers me. I used to be quite active a few years ago. Ever since I had children, I've never really managed to get back into training. I often had breaks for a few months or years. This time however I honestly think I'm finished for good. I did think it might suit my kids to do - she's now 8 and he's 4, but I don't know if I want to get them into martial arts. They are busy doing other things and the thought of glove-less sparring matches... Just a quick hello ..read more

Back to martial arts, after a long break... But it's not taekwondo!

Well, it's been years since I hung my black belt up, didn't think I'd be pulling it down off its hook again, ever. I reckon it must have been at least 12 years since I was in the dojang. I think my daughter was 2 when I had to give it up because 'life' was getting in the way. The thing is though, it'd be quite weird going back to taekwondo all old, stiff and creaky and barely able to remember the colour belt patterns let alone the black belt ones. Kids who were white belts when I left are... Back to martial arts, after a long break... But it's not taekwondo ..read more

Since Roman times and before, mankind has always had a lust for mortal combat, maybe the reason why ‘No Holds Barred’ fighting competitions such as UFC haven’t captured the public imagination the way boxing has is that it appears to be commercialized. Boasting about having ‘no rules’ is clearly transparent, of course there are rules! Taekwondo is different. It is closer to boxing, it is for real. Taekwondo techniques are scientifically proven and are under constant research in the... Practical Benefits of Taekwondo ..read more

Pattern technique breakdown

I've been thinking about the Ch'ang Hon (ITF) patterns and wondering if we used them as a foundation or template for taekwondo how would it break down... Looking at the first 9 patterns (Chon-ji to Choong Moo) there are 258 moves in total. Of that 27 moves are kicks (10.4%), 4 (1.55%) are elbows and 2 (0.78%) are knees. That means the TKD patterns are just over 87.2% hand techniques (including punches, strikes, blocks, grip releases, etc). Which is not quite the kick heavy art modern... Difference Between Taekwondo and Tang Soo Do

I was wondering if anyone could outline the differences between Taekwondo and Tang Soo Do. I have heard that Tang Soo Do works more on hands and puts a heavy emphasis on poomsae/forms, but I'm not sure how valid this claim is. This is purely for curiosity's sake, but what are the big differences between these two arts? ~ Ben ..read more
