This is my first elm, I bought it having been recently dug out of the ground and heavily root trimmed. I removed a couple branches and potted it in a good deciduous mix. Buds swelled and it started pushing new growth, and about a week ago I noticed this purple/blackening and wilting on most of the new leaves.
Can anyone identify what's going on? Will the new growth get frost bite if temps get too low (mid 30s) at night... or is this the "black spot" fungus I've been reading about? Any...

Hello yall,
One of my pines looks infested with some sort of nymph. No clue on what this is as I don't often deal with pests on my black pines. They're scattered all over the tree and the old growth is starting to yellow. The new candles are growing fine, but they've clumped near the candles so I'm worried of them attacking new growth now.
Any clue on what these insects are? They're very small, the largest around 2/3 mm long. They're also filled with fluid, probably from feeding on the...

Hi everyone,
Very excited to take part in this contest to honour Vance. Being my first Mugo pine it is refreshing to have a clear set of seasonal instructions to follow and I am looking forward to seeing how it develops over the next 4 years.
I have selected this Mugo Pine 'Coolwyn's Globe' from Conifer Gardens nursery just outside Melbourne in Australia. It is seed grown so no graft issues and has short needles at around 2cm / 0.8inches.
Being in the southern hemisphere in a relatively...

I rather enjoy making little trees. Have not had a small cascade.
No more mesh or screen, so used some wire and anchored them to 5mm under the pot for stability

I have decided to be a little more studious ,I am trying to make my store bought nursery plants into Pre bonsai. By trimming and pruning ,down to best level to grow from ,then just taking care of there needs until they are ready for more work. Since I am retired I have more time for there care. And play around with any new trees I come upon ..read more

Probably like everyone else, I've been busy repotting. Still quite a few trees to go, but I thought I'd start posting some pictures. This is a tree that I got from Brent at Evergreen last fall, and I did the initial styling last November at a pine workshop held by one of our club members. Then it was repotted a couple of weeks ago at my new study group. The front half of the roots were cleaned out, and it was potted in 1/3 each akadama/pumice/lava. The back half will be cleaned out next...

Been wheeling this beauty in and out of my sunroom using a dolly for about 3 weeks now to protect it from the cold. Can't wait to throw a bunch of air layers on the branches this May and hopefully get a bunch of trees to work on.
After I get the branches air layered I might go for broke on a trunk air layer to see if I can remove it from the ugly graft and root stock it has. Won't really be upset if it fails and/or dies since I'll already have the branches from it ..read more

I got this Afghan Pine as a gift 2 years ago. I read somewhere here that they don't make great bonsai, but I've got it and here we are.
I'd like for it to be a formal upright style one day.
It has grown very well here, has plenty of new growth, and is now forming candles on the apex.
So far I have done nothing other than potting it up 2 years ago and I did wire a couple of the lower branches down for a few months as a test.
What steps should I be taking on this tree to achieve a formal...
