Each of our senses, when engaged, has the power to call forth strong memories or emotions or it can help us make new ones. So when a designer says ‘designing for the senses’, what do you think about? Do you think about the sounds, the visuals, the space or how things feel? You would be almost right. What about smell and taste—two senses of which we experience the world through daily and yet these often get left out. Samantha Copland started Perfume Playground as a sensory experience for your nose. Perfume Playground offers workshops at which you create your personal, natural signature scent. I ..read more

The magic that happens when you combine design disciplines with Something More Design
Ligature Journal
by Anne Vu

As designer’s in our respective fields we tend to focus on our disciplines and become really good at what we do…which means we sometimes forget to look outwards to gain new perspectives and to see what designer’s from other design industries are up to. Something More Design is a studio run by Olivia Chapman and Keeley Baird that sees the successful and seamless blending of two design disciplines—graphic and interior design. Chapman and Baird turned their love of design into a practice that assists other brands to tell their stories cohesively across all touch points. Olivia and Keeley turned t ..read more

The second installment of Behind the Designer kicks off with Huy Nguyen, a recent designer on issue 9. Huy undoubtedly has an eye for photography and the style that is seen within his photos is reflected back into his design work. Having worked as a freelancer while gaining experience at Ligature Journal, we’ve seen Huy do more and more work in the arts—our curiosity got the better of us and we wanted to know how and why he’s gotten into this sector. Hi again! Having been a part of our team during the pandemic, how have you been coping with everything since? First of all, I would have to say ..read more

Ligature Journal
by Anne Vu

While the start of the pandemic may have felt like a life time ago, it has had lasting ramifications on our society. From quite early on we started seeing racially-charged verbal and physical attacks on the Asian community, a boycotting and avoidance of Asian eateries and supermarkets and closures of our favourite local Asian restaurants. Cases in Australia, at this point, were quite few and far in between but that didn’t stop some members of our society expressing their racially charged views. Designers Michael Souvanthalisith and Muriel-Ann Ricafrente, with Asian-Australian backgrounds thems ..read more
