Skinner is a fantastic scoring talent, the problem is that he is also horrible defensively to the point where the team concedes far more scoring chances than they generate when he's on the ice. Perfectly fine if you have enough two-way guys to cover for him, but if you don't that's an issue. It also makes his $9 million AAV a tad p ..read more

Also, after a relatively hot start, Bo Byram did not finish the year strong. Buffalo better be getting one hell of a coach in there this offseason. That team has talent coming out every which way, but their structure and discipline is nonexistent. Basically unless they get superstar goaltending they don't have a chance to win. Well lookee here...might be too late but the Sabres are really trying to snag a playoff spot. And thanks to the Red Wings' recent plummet, they have an outside chance. Ukko-Pekka Luukonen has been playing out of his mind the last couple months, so that's a huge help, but I'm told by some Sabres fans that after starting the year with a more structured defensive system that all but killed their offense, Granato said fuck it and told the guys to run-and-gun it from here on out. And they did. The recent addition of Bowen Byram has simply jumpstarted that into overdrive. Will they make it? Who kn ..read more

Clearing the puck is a tiny bit more difficult because you're handling it closer to the slot and a bit higher in the zone, likely closer to forechecking forwards, but you're also able to clear rebounds in front away on your forehand more safely to the boards. I was always coached that righties play on the right and lefties play on the left. When I got to beer league I had a team of mostly righties who all wanted to be on the right side and I was new so I got p ..read more

Didn't realize until the Sabres came to town that both Connor Clifton and Erik Johnson are RHDs, which means Johnson has had to play the left side for most of his stint in Buffalo. I've watched EJ for the better part of 13 seasons and could count on one hand the number of shifts (not games, SHIFTS) he played on his off-side. Seems pretty dumb to me to ask a 36-year-old veteran to make such a drastic change in what is likely his final year in the NHL, but what do I know? I get that it gives some good perspective and allows for the broadcaster to do some impromptu interviews during the game but I wonder if it's worth it. But yeah, Rob Ray taking a puck in the face ain't gonna faze him. Yeah, all they mainly do is say "there's chirping between the benches but I can't repeat what was said".
