The Grit Rankings: Which Sabres players do you think play with that dog mentality?

Grit or that dog mentality here refers to a players willingness and desire to engage in physical play, that could be hits, reverse hits, using their body to gain or fight for positioning, and overall just a really gritty game of battling for and winning pucks. Note that it isn't simply, do they hit stuff but do they consistently engage physically in those 1v1 battles all over the ice and do they win? Now, I doubt this will work because... well don't worry for now. So the task is to rank the current roster in terms of what I describe above. Only players currently on the roster count, so don't g ..read more

Jiri Kulich through the lens of JJ Peterka

Jiri Kulich is ridiculously young still. Not quite like just turned 19 Zach Benson but Kulich only turned 20 and the number of 18-19yr olds in the AHL is... 8. There were 8 guys who played 15 or more AHL games this past year. I filtered to 15 games to get rid of all the guys who show-up at the end of years to get some games in like our own Noah Östlund.  8 players in his age group and Jiri Kulich was 2nd in points (45pts) behind former 4th overall pick Shane Wright (47pts). He's 2nd on the list in total points and in ppg where Wright edges him out 0.80ppg to 0.79ppg. Other names here migh ..read more

Blue & Gold Insights - Adams, Ruff, Duff

So, they had the biggest B&G I yet.  Had about 2/3s of the rink set up with chairs and about 3/4's of those were full.  A few people were also scattered throughout the lower bowl but there weren't too many of them. Some topics covered (with my commnets in parenthesis): What's been the main thing this off-season so far.  For Adams it was the exit meetings with the players; finding out what they thought of their individual seasons and letting them know what he thought of them.  Missed Ruff's answer. Kevyn & Lindy talk every day so he's getting an understanding of what ..read more

OT- Best Lake in New York State

As I mentioned in another thread, some colleagues were discussing the best lake in Ontario. There's so many to choose from, and it was kind of an interesting discussion. Since most posters are either from NYS, or have a connection there and given the state is home to many of the best lakes in the US... I thought I'd bring up the topic here. Of course you have the two Great Lakes... I'd call it a toss up between the two. Lots of nice Finger Lakes. I haven't seen them all, but of those I have seen, I like Canandaigua the best (slight edge over Skaneateles). I haven't spent much time downstate or ..read more

Should the NHL reduce the number of rounds in the draft?

I read that there is some talk about the Agents and Union want to reduce the draft from 7 rounds to 4.   https://thehockeywriters.com/nhl-draft-4-round-potential/. Apparently Elliotte Friedman raised the issue in his podcast. THW raises the issue of UDFAs gravitating towards good teams, making it harder for the Buffalo’s of the world to compete.  I also know that most teams don’t even have 150 kids on their draft board on draft day.  My initial reaction is that reducing it to 5 rounds won’t make much of a difference.  Ullmark is probably the most impactful 6th or 7th rd pic ..read more

Sabres want to re-sign Girgensons according to Lance! Seriously? Why?

I came across this tidbit and it almost made me sick. https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/buffalo-sabres Quote The Sabres are interested in re-signing pending unrestricted free agent Zemgus Girgensons, relays Lance Lysowski of The Buffalo News. The 30-year-old has spent the last ten seasons with Buffalo after they drafted him in the first round back in 2012.  However, Girgensons hasn’t reached the 20-point mark since his sophomore year and while he provides some value in a limited checking role, it could make sense for both sides for the forward to ultimately move on. Please G-d ..read more

Below is an excerpt from a NYT/The Athletic article that ranks each teams' broadcast. I need to know which of you is being quoted here. We need to talk. Is there " widespread praise" for DD? I think he's trying his best but there are problems which have been well documented here. I don't know who scored until 3-5 seconds after a goal goes in. The DD-Razor banter about nonsense as the play is going on is insufferable.  I get that this topic is highly unnecessary, but I'm bored. _______________________________________________________________________________ The Results: In his s ..read more
