Once you decide that you want to teach English overseas, do not be in a rush to accept the first job and especially the first contract someone offers you. Doing so will get you placed in a low-paying job that others don’t want. Do your homework and spend at least an hour researching the location, reputation, and compensation packages of the various schools (over 5,000 in the world that hire Art, IB, Subject, AP, and TEFL teachers). I suggest you visit and read these two sites where a lot of veteran language teachers post their experiences, recommendations, tips and warnings for the last 10-20 ..read more

READING BOTH SIDES OF THE STORY IS ESSENTIAL

We are deeply concerned to read this kind of comment. The teachers were offered financial support for the work visa after the training. Unfortunately the school manager did not know if the teachers were able to teach (since it was their first experience) and willing to stay at school at least for 6 months. For this reason we could not offer a contract before their arrival. The teacher who sent that comment was under pressure because not only she was inexperienced and without a degree, she did not understand how difficult it was to get a work visa in Italy. As for the work visa, the teachers we ..read more

If a teacher applies, and then finds out that it is a scam and alerts the scammer to this fact, the scammer then threatens to publish the teacher’s personal details online. He then proceeds to send an email to various recruitment sites and other random email addresses, saying that the teacher is a scammer! Please do not have any contact with this individual, and do not send him copies of passports or other documents ..read more

Over the past year, we have had reports from three different teachers about English Club in Cerignola, Italy. The three teachers were employed by English Club at different times. Their employment dates did not overlap and they did not know each other. All three teachers reported several questionable business practices used by the employer. We believe that these three similar and independent reports justify a post in this forum. Please see below the report of one of these teachers: “Myself and many other teachers have each had terrible experiences from working for this school. They hired us wit ..read more

Makes sense. Since adults are more likely to take part in discussions, unlike children they could be easily taught and trained. Adults are open to changes compared to children, hence any tips that are shared with them, adults are more likely to adapt to it. Adults encourage the tutor to be more interactive ..read more

Hello Mr. Taylor These scammers are still going strong. One update: They have changed the travel agency’s name to Karim Travel Agency (karimtravelagency@gmail.com) Also, they are adding the Director’s name in the email, which is wrong if you check with the real Director’s LinkedIn profile. I find it very strange that sites like lovetefl.com are not taking down these adverts despite receiving complaints ..read more

Employer claiming to be iEnglish Language Institute in UAE

Job posts have recently been made by someone claiming to be from iEnglish Language Institute in the UAE. Please note that the real iEnglish Language Institute is a legitimate school, and their website is https://ienglish.ae/en. However, this individual is using their good name to scam teachers into handing over money. The warning signs are as follows: 1. Their salary offer is extremely high ($4800 per month), even by UAE standards. 2. They offer positions immediately, without an interview. 3. They use a Gmail address as the contact email address. (The genuine school’s email address is info@ien ..read more

Hello! Thank you for reading my post. I’m new to the Forum, but not to the profession, and I’m a learner, as well as an instructor. I am conducting research for my dissertation for a Ph.D. in leadership, the topic of my study being Leadership in Online Language Schools. Accordingly, I am inviting instructors who are or have been employed by an online language school to work remotely (e.g., from home) teaching English to speakers of other languages via the World Wide Web to complete an anonymous electronic survey form, which comprises 45 multiple-choice questions and will take approximat ..read more
