I've found myself in this very odd situation recently - clean install of Windows 10 64-bit (BIOS mode / not UEFI), installed with the 1803 installer. It installed fine, then Windows Update kicked in and it updated to 22H2, no problem there. However, when it attempted to install 202401 security update (KB5034441), it returned error 80070643 which according to the Internet means that the recovery partition doesn't have enough space to do the update. I attempted to follow Microsoft's instructions which are in fact wrong. It correctly instructs how to use diskpart to shrink the OS partition by 25 ..read more

MacOS desktop folders gone

I have a colleague who has just lost her all her desktop folders in macos. She is running a Danish version of macos and at 14.47 today her "Skrivebord" (desktop) changed name to "Desktop" (from Danish to English), and in that process everything on her desktop disappeared. If you look at recent files in Finder or Word, you can see some files, but they will not open. She uses icloud, so I logged on to her icloud.com but it was nothing from her old "skrivebord" I've used spotlight search to look for the folders - nothing They are not in the trashcan. I've tried Disk Drill to at least locate t ..read more

Hi, Okay, i guess SteamOS is kinda BigTech too, as valve is not small. But at least it is a private company and the operating system is open source.. As topic says, i am too tired of big tech companies screwing me from infront and from behind. So ive decided(Not just decided, ive actually deleted windows) Iam using Yumi to try out different Linux Distros without having to make a new usb boot disk every time. It works great. But for the steamOS story it is the place i ran into an issue. Since Valve is only sharing .img of their steamOS, and Yumi like iso's best.. So after trying to copy the i ..read more

I went from a Intel 4930 to a AMD 5950x . I cloned all the disks using partition magic. bios set to UEFI. Would not boot, get a blue screen, inaccessible device. Put a windows 10 install USB stick in. boot OK, but will not repair startup. Tried upgrade, only works from a booted win 10. Tried install feature upgrades, says its MGR and can't do it. Upgraded disks to GPT. still will not do anything. Any way to save installed programs and data ..read more

Linux Mint 21.x - apparent graphics card/driver burp - how should I have handled this?

A week or so ago I was using my computer for basic apps usage (office / browsing apps) when the screen went blank. No caps lock response, I tried waiting for a bit, so I pressed the reset button. In hindsight I should have tried harder to regain control of the system but Linux troubleshooting is not a field that I have much experience in (unlike Windows). I'm asking now because I want to learn more. After rebooting, I took a copy of /var/log/kern.log, and here are the bits that I think are most relevant: Code: Jan 22 14:55:56 mikepc kernel: [30967.242712] [drm] VRAM is lost due to GPU re ..read more

Unsure where to post this, but I randomly got LOTS of free space on non-system drive(s)... (Windows 11)

So I have this RAID-0 (striping) array that has been working flawlessly for years (2 x 250GB VelociRaptor drives). For days now, it's been almost maxed out, with only around 1GB of free space. Accordingly, I've been in the process of setting up a NAS rig to move things over and free up space, and give myself more working space (I use the RAID-0 array as a working space for editing videos and such). Strangely, just now, I noticed that I magically have 9+ GB of free space now, instead of ~1GB. And no files seem to be missing, afaik. Any ideas on what's going on here? The drives seem to be wor ..read more

Why is it that whatever is in C:users:susse:students may not be in ocuments:students Is this the same issue: I do a search and the result shows two of everything? When I post a question, I often get another question or a request for an example. I answer it and then it goes into a black hole. I've asked this before ..read more

Windows and pointing device scroll direction

Thanks to an experience with one of my customers who changed from using a Mac to Windows, I only just noticed this. Chronologically speaking, AFAIK it was Apple who decided that wheel scroll up = moving downward/advancing through a document. Then at some point touchpad manufacturers inexplicably also thought that this was a great idea. Standard touchpad drivers in Win10/11 have this implemented by default now. However, a mouse wheel scroll down still goes with the Windows traditional default, ie. scroll down equals scrolling downward/advancing through a document. I would have thought by now ..read more
