Thread: General Gaming:: What games do you think everyone should try?

by n8_the_gr8 Hello! I am designing a board game, and I keep hearing that I should play as many games as possible to see what mechanics and designs I like. I feel like I've been out of the loop for a while, so I wanted to see if I can find a list anywhere. Maybe I should try every general type of game? Games that are more than 5 or 10 years old might be best, since I plan on finding games at libraries. Here's what I've played so far, although I haven't played any in the modern list in a while: Ancient games: Go, hex, chess, checkers, nine men's morris Classic games: Monopoly, Risk, Scrabble ..read more

Thread: General Gaming:: What is a "Boss Battler"?

by mic_al I've been hearing and seeing this term come up lately, and I am confused. Traditional videogames, whether RPGs like Diablo, sidescrolling fighting games like Final Fight, platformers like Mario, whatever... often feature various stages or levels filled with minions (cookie cutter standard enemies that are clones of each other and maybe come in new colors and/or types but are ubiquitous... examples are thug with bat, thug with gun, etc...) and "bosses" which are often unique enemies that have special moves, are tougher, a unique appearance, and may have some backstory or lore fitting ..read more

Thread: General Gaming:: Is GMT where games go to die?

by Hovercraft 1960: The Making of the President is currently out of print and I have it on P500 preorder. Conquest of Paradise was just taken off of the P500 preorder list from lack of interest. Typically, games can be on these lists for years I can’t help thinking that if GMT would just do a FOMO Kickstarter, the games would get funded lickity split. I wouldn’t like that and think P500 is better. No FOMO. No ridiculous stretch goals. No absurd miniatures. But that’s not what people want. 1960 was formerly on Z Man I think GMT is the best publisher of games today. They’re a stamp of qualit ..read more

Thread: General Gaming:: Riffle shuffle gets unjustified bad rap.

by borsook In the gaming sphere there is neverending war between proponents and antagonists of sleeving. One argument often giving in favour of sleeving is that shuffling damages cards. Especially riffle shuffle seems to considered dangerous in this respect. Many a time have I read comments like "always ask before you riffle shuffle someones cards". I'd like to pose a thesis that not only can shuffle a deck thousands of times without a visible damage (I know after a 110 games of Dominion) but also that riffle shuffle is the lesser damaging kind. Three caveats - when you handle things it chan ..read more

Thread: General Gaming:: Just a mundane morning in my boardgaming journey( a short story)

by magmaxtic I woke up to chatter coming through the TV screen, and tried to gather my thoughts. The weather man was working hard to convince me that this unseasonably hot May week was at an end, and that tomorrow the temperatures will plummet and have us reaching for our raincoats. I didn't buy it. The young man was over-articulate, gesticulating so wildly over the map of cartoon thunderclouds, it felt like he was attempting to draw the attention of some dormant African storm deity. My wife Tess was busy folding laundry on the terrace and softly humming to herself. "Hey, honey, good mornin ..read more

Thread: General Gaming:: I'm launching my own game and hoping for advice

by Boans Hey you all! I'm new here and I'm hoping I posted this in the right forum. My wife and I are launching our first card game. It has the feel of something like a futuristic Magic the Gathering but is not collectible - 108 card deck and the play is more fast paced - almost like UNO. Anyway, I really wanted to go full bleed with the artwork (on the faces), all the way to the edges, and not have a border because it just seemed more modern and art friendly, but my wife is concerned that some of the artwork might be just visible enough for one player to tell what another has in their hand if ..read more

by Arctic Jack Please forgive my ignorance with site knowledge… 1. Wasn’t there once a separate wargaming forum here on BGG? If there was, I can’t find it. 2. Is there a popular wargaming guild? I can’t find that either. 3. I’ve just looked at the old ‘Wargameroom’ website, it looks half dead, did they move their chat to discord? 4. Is there a popular wargame discord chat? Please help ..read more

by Shazinga186 A recent blog that was focusing on great board game photography saw one subscriber lament about how their pet ‘hate’ was seeing games photographed on patterned tablecloths and the like. I saw an opportunity to post one of my own photos of one of my game boxes (Bumúntú) on our regular tablecloth. Anyone else like to share some of their own similar situations ..read more
