People generally, to one degree or another, strive to play modern games by their rules as written. Some groups may house rule, but it is usually a local exception, and the mean across all players would be the written rules.
There’s a strong case to be made for games as evolving cultural institutions, much like language or songs. Not fixed, but varying through time and space. Certainly this is true of traditional games, and I think it’s even true of some manufactured games of the 20th century which were widespread enough to see their rules as written become broadly ignored. But is ..read more

Just saw the list of Board Game Events for Origins 2024 in June. Event Tickets are available a week from Saturday on May 4 at 1p EST.
Wow...While there are about 700 games listed as events to play in....the field seems a little on the weakside. Not a lot of newer games. No Zombicide games (kind of a convention staple for us), with the exception of Marvel Zombies (guess my wife and I will need to get our Zombicide fix with that one). A lot of games that traditionally are at Origins have not yet made it to the Events Listing yet, though the Train Gamers Association is hosting a l ..read more

Happy (almost) Friday, y'all!
Standard Disclaimer
I want to acknowledge that in reality most people would prefer to find a different option to the two presented in these polls. This is a theoretical exercise in which people are compelled to choose one of only two options. Please embrace it for what it is, think about your priorities that underlay how you interact with the hobby, and then tell everyone why your answer is the correct answer.

In a lot of other communities/hobbies that I'm in, I've noticed that people started to create videos, see that they are not getting as many views as their "competitors" and quit after half a year. In this community I noticed that while maybe some people might care for the views, A LOT of you do it just out of love the the boardgames and just want to spread your knowledge to everyone else. I was on YouTube and found this board game content creator that made videos for years. 400 followers, and some videos get 20 views, some get 200 views. Not much, but it still didn't discourage t ..read more

... be transparent about it. I am not a fan of AI art. I will not support games or publishers that use AI art. I am tired of looking at a project, looking at the art and graphic design and going...."wait a minute"... and then asking the publisher / creator which then they come clean about AI art.
If you're going to choose a controversial way for making your games, then own it! That means accepting the consequences of that decision. As a consumer, I shouldn't have to pour over art to see if there are illogical hands, or wonky details that don't belong. Tell consumers up front so info ..read more

I've been to my share of conventions, and missed them after 2019. But getting back into it, I'm really enjoying it again. While I have my regular game groups, getting to a convention helps expand my experiences in tabletop gaming. I just returned from a smaller one that I had visited last year, and it may be my favorite convention so far.

These days I tend to sleeve all of my games because I hate it when I have just a card or two that has marks on the back which makes them identifiable (although I guess if your cards weren't sleeved then they'd all get wear and tear and then wouldn't be identifiable, does anyone who doesn't sleeve find that to be the case?).
I saw this video online where the shuffling is so gentle that I imagine it wouldn't damage sleeveless cards:

So it made me wonder if the above shuffling method (or other methods) might keep sleeveless cards ..read more

Okay, so technically, Tom was soliciting for anyone interested in making short videos to introduce each number in an upcoming Dice Tower "Top 100" video, and I volunteered. ?
I got "#84" which went live today! (Here's the link for anyone interested. I introduce #84 right around 41:27)
Unfortunately, I made my video around a running Mike Dilisio joke that I thought would get a laugh out of Tom and Zee, not knowing that this Top 100 would be hosted by Wendy, Jason, and Roy... ?? But hey, as a Dice Tower fan and a small youtube channel, it was SUPER COOL to see myself and the Bo ..read more
