My living room floor was rotted out, so I had to replace most of the joists. I've replaced all the joists. It was a huge pain fitting these in because the span is 13 1/2' and I could only fit 2x8s. My problem is a few of the joists are about an inch off from being level. Is there a limit to how much you can shim the top of a joist ..read more

So I'm selling my in-laws house. In checking things over I noticed there's a utility outlet near the compressor, but it's wired directly to the disconnect with the hot wire on one of the 240V hots, the neutral and the ground wired to the ground. Yikes. That's a 50A circuit going right to the receptacle, not to mention the neutral current being carried over the ground.
So I'd like to fix this, but I've only got three wires coming into the disconnect (hot-hot-ground). It's on the opposite...

We had a new roof installed late last year, today I was informed by a handyman that the way the flashing and shingles are installed is incorrect. In looking at the attached photo, is this correct or should the shingles fit on top of the flashing ..read more

I was looking at my load center for something else and noticed something strange about the grounds. In this picture, the lines from the meter come in through the fitting in the bottom at the back (2 black, one black/white, one green).
1. The ground line from the meter isn't connected to anything (look at the taped green wire on the left, next to the black hot one).
2. I had solar panels installed some years ago and their connection comes in through the short conduit on the lower left - one...

I’m trying to remove a half separating wall in a bathroom and found these pipes. Whatthere’s these? (I suspect they might be vents for the water heater ave the furnace?)
why are there two pipes? (If they are in fact vents, there’s piping in the garage that merges them today. (The pipes are approximately over the lamp in the second picture)
how do I best go about moving them ..read more

So after some input from you guys (and my wife), I've scaled down my kids' playset... Won't be as epic, but should be a lot easier to build! I tend to be overly optimistic about how quickly I can complete a project, so thanks for keeping me in check.
I would like the great DIY Chatroom blessing on the new plan before I start buying materials, just to make sure I'm on the right track.
Here's what I'm thinking:
